do sweet potatoes count as a vegetable?

I always thought a potato was a vegetable, that contained carbohydrate

They're a vegetable that counts towards your 5 a day which a white potato doesn't buts it's still a vegetable. Sweet potatoes aren't potatoes anyway, they're just a root veg that resembles a potato.

I always thought that although they are called potatoes they are more like a carrot or parsnip classification wise.
