I was wondering, how do you know when to give your little one an extra oz in the bottles?! Do you just follow the back of the packet of formula or do you go by your little one?!

Brandon will be 8 weeks tomorrow and it says that we should increase him to 6 oz in his feeds. But sometimes he will drain his 5oz bottles and sometimes he only takes 4oz. Should we put him up to 6oz?!

We are at a similar stage with Ruby. It tends to be on night feeds she wants more so we are gonna go up to 6oz just for those and see how she goes.I hate it when i make up 5 and she only drinks 3!
She is 10 weeks on thursday

I would make up the 6oz and if he/she takes it then its happy days but if not no worries.

I know with Alex he sometimes drains the 5oz feeds then the next time he takes 3oz lol

Adam is 8 weeks old and so *should* be on 6oz bottles but he's insisting on 5oz most of the time - it's funny. If I give him some EBM and then top up with formula he still will have 5oz - if he gets 2oz EBM he will only take 3oz formula or if we offer a 6oz bottle he'll stop at 5. he's self-regulating and I am going with it because otherwise I end up wasting a lot. Just twice he's had a whole 6oz bottle. I'm thinking of making up an extra bottle for the fridge and if he wants a bit more, pour some from it into the bottle he's been using, so the extra bottle itself doesn't become unsterile and he can have the rest later.

It's hard to follow when he's already the size of the 2 month old! He's just shy of 11lbs so technically should be on 5 6oz feeds, but there's no way he would go longer than four hours for a feed.

As for going up an ounce, health visitor said that when they regularly start to drain their biggest bottle to go up an oz, so that they're always leaving some, that way you know they're full.

Oh goodness - Miss M is 11 weeks old and only has 4oz per feed! That is all she'll take, and we can't seem to get more into her without her starting to choke and scream. Her weight gain is normal, so we aren't really worried though. How is your LO's weight gain?

:)

Don't follow the packet - follow your LO's apetite. Like adults' apetites, they come in all different sizes!
I agree with Cindarella that you only know your baby is full when they have left some milk.
However my LO takes 9oz and usually drains it. Considering she easily lasts 4 hours between feeds in the day and 10 hours at night, and her weight gain is extremely fast, I don't give her 10oz! Plus it won't fit in the bottle!

iv never followed the packet,it was a bit hard considering at 7 weeks he was already taking 6oz of milk lol xx

Sam is 5 months and never takes more than 6oz per feed if I'm lucky so I don't follow the guidelines!! Every feed is a struggle so I am just pleased if he takes anything

His weight gain is perfectly normal. He is 8 weeks now and has put on 3lb since birth! Health visitor seemed happy with that!

Weve started making up 6oz bottles cos yesterday he drained all his bottles. So the past 2 bottles weve made up 6oz and he is leaving a little bit at the bottom!

Thanks everyone :Dxxx

Brandon and Adam seem to be totally in synch! Adam is 8 weeks old and also has gained 3lb since birth and is only just taking a 6oz bottle :D

Thats the same as my HV sais so thats what I go by :)

we just upped it wen she started draining the bottle.. gosh i remember wen she didnt finish 2oz

luisa went up an oz until she was on 8oz bottles about 4 weeks ago.. but now its so varied on a normal day she will have 3 x 8oz bottles but today she has had 4 already.. as she isnt eating well (cold & teeth i think)

let your lo guide you.. id say as long as they are gaining weight then its fine :)
