Do you make up a feed or add powder to water later?

I make 2 batches of 4 (1 in the morning, 1 in the evening) and this seems to be doign us just fine - plus my milton bucket only seems to fit 4 bottles and caps etc in at one time so it makes good sense and means I can adjust the size of the feeds accordingly.

My MIL did it this way too and she recommended this to me - My Mum as far as I can gather wanted to kill me as she used hot tap water to make up as she went!!!! :dohh: She also never sterilised anything either and I'm still here! Lord knows how as according to the HV's she did everythng wrong!!

BTW My SIL slept on her stomach for the first year of her life and my hubby used to get put in his pram and left at the bottom of the garden in the middle of February when he was a newborn to 'get some air'.......babies are resilient! I'm not saying that these are the way to bring up baby, I'm saying that the things we do now as 'guidelines' will be outdated soon enough and our kids will be turning to us saying 'you used to use Milton, that stuff's lethal' or 'I used to sleep on my back with my feet against the bottom of the bed? How am I still able to walk!' lol.

Its so true! LOL :)

Apparently I slept upright in a pushchair as I had bronchitus when I was a baby so no flat on my back for me and I'm okay!

I also read you CAN eat peanuts whilst pregnant now (unless you or Partner has an allergy obviously!!) so they really can not make up there minds with these guidelines!!

PS I do 4 feeds for each too, seems to suite Chloe and so long as she s happy then I am happy! :)

Thanks all :hugs:

We have gone down the route of boiling the water, letting it cool, add the powder, let the feeds cool a bit more then pop them in the fridge and Chloe seems fine on them.

exactly what i do hunny!:happydance:

I started off making each bottle as Adam needed it, then as the feeds got bigger and it took longer to cool, I decided to make a few up at a time and refrigerate. Then I got panicked and figured out a new way. Now, I prepare about half the water in advance, pour boiling water into a small sterile bottle (120ml) and chill (it's ok to add boiling water to bottles that don't contain BPA). And I have already prepared the powder, I do 6 at a time of the Tommee Tippee little containers. At feeding time I boil fresh water and add 90ml to a big bottle, then add a little of the chilled water to cool slightly and add the powder. Mix, then add the rest of the water - this is a 210ml feed. It sounds faffy but it's all in the prep, as it makes it very quick at feeding time; I feel better that the powder is always added to hot enough water, but Adam doesn't have to wait. I've found it takes ages for a 210ml bottle to cool.

Out and about we use cartons. I've once taken a bottle with me that Adam had had one sip of and fed him the rest, oh, maybe an hour and a half later... I didn't chill it in my bag. He was fine but I'd not do that again!

That's the way I've always done it too. This way you can prepare a feed quickly and then it's at the right temp to feed.

Seeing as Earl is 4 weeks old now, we're going to try the whole room temperature boiled water, add the formula technique for his night feeds tonight. Seems a lot easier to add 6 scoops of formula to some water than to try to judge the length of time to warm the bottle and deal with boiling kettles!

If I'm going out .. I fill the bottles with distilled water and then just take the powder with me and put it in/shake it up when she's ready to feed. I put two scoops in a little ziploc snack bag. It's also a lot easier this way, because there's no warming the formula up from fridge temp etc cause the water is already room temp and she's quite happy to eat it like that.

If I'm at home, I just fill 3 bottles with distilled water and leave them next to the formula tub until I need them. Then I just chuck 2 scoops in, shake and am ready to go.

Your midwife is correct about chucking the formula away, she's not telling you that to scare you at all .. cept on my tin it says if it's not used with in an hour to chuck it away vs 30 minutes.
Of course this is at room temp, if you make them up and leave them in the fridge and use them with in the day, that's fine. Room temp made up formula allows for bacteria to grow.

It's the same with the small 4oz ready mixed formula, once you break the seal you need to throw it away after an hour.

Well it was a lot easier and we will be doing this in future!! I still make them up and put them in the fridge during the day, but at night, this is so good and takes out the problems of overheating the bottles that both me and hubby have experienced recently. :happydance:

:haha: so so true!!

i don't have my little one here yet to feed, but my best friend uses the jugs of distilled water and then when she needs a bottle, she just pours in the water and formula and shakes it and is ready to go. isn't using the distilled water the same as using boiled water?

also one more question... are most babies content to feed on a room temperature bottle or do they seem to prefer it warmed up?

We've always done room temp water, add powder when needed.
Much easier for us and AJ has never liked a warm bottle. :)
