Do you ovulate first period after first baby?

Hi - had a baby 8 months ago, and periods came back in Dec - we want to try for baby no 2 asap due to being over 35 - I have been weeing on sticks but haven't ovulated??? Is this ok? What have others found? Thanks in advance!
