Do you tell your baby 'No!'?

I say "NO" sometimes, but try not to use it too much since I find it a bit negetive. I use "Don't Touch" or "Hands Off" more than I use the word no. When I do say "no", she stops what she's doing and bawls.

I don't want no to be her next new word and then she says it all the time to me

Haha, I was just saying about my nephew understanding no, he's the same age as your LO.

He can't talk yet but sometimes when he's feeling naughty and he's told no he'll look up, shake his head to say "no" and then carry on, it's so cute! xx

i have used the word no from day one with both my kids they have to geta good understanding from as early as possible of the word in my opinion otherwise they would run a riot lol x

You're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't!

I tell Jake no. You have to!

In a low deep tone, yes, when it is dangerous (ie. electrical cords, hot oven). So it's rare. for anything else, I use distraction.

I use no with Nevaeh.. and now she understands it but usually chooses not to listen lol.. instead she tells me no

'No' doesn't work with Ivy. She just looks at me, smiles and starts shaking her head  Sometimes it actually makes her laugh hysterically! So I have just started directing her away from whatever she is doing wrong and say 'not for Ivy'.

Thanks for everyones replies.... I did think my friends comment was a bit weird, but she was so adamant I started to question myself!! :dohh:

I tell LO no, it doesn't always work but some days he listens.

We don't use the word no where possible as after a while they just stop listening.

From a early age we explained why she couldn't have things. so would say 'mummies glasses.not for river'. I think doing that means she knows why she cant do things rather then just because I said no.

For us it has worked really well and river understands what she can and can't do do she knows she can't touch certain things because they are mummys/hot/dangerous rather then just because I said no

Yes I did! It is soo hard to keep a straight face when she does it :haha: But don't listen to your friend, sounds like shes being very judgey without having kids of her own! The only reason we don't use 'no' is because it doesn't work with Ivy, but its definitely not mean!

I've used it since the start. I don't expect her to understand but it's part of conversation and she'll probably hear it a fair bit when older, so I don't see it as too early to start.

I also say 'ah-ah' when she grabs my hair, and I'll take it out of her hand. Again, I don't expect her to understand, but then, I've no idea when she'll start to.

It's the same with her name - I don't know when she'll start to recognise her own name but I'm not going to hold off on saying it until I know she recognises it. And I'm not going to stop telling her I love her until she's older either, even if it's all just funny sounds coming out of Mammy's mouth at the moment.

I say "no" to Fran too - like others have said it's important that they learn what is and isn't acceptable from an early age. She might not understand it now but she soon will.

And store this little gem away for when your friend has her own baby and when you catch her saying "no", you can dig her in the ribs and remind her lol.

Aww thank you! I'm not too sure though, she's not too great at playing hard to get. Her new thing seems to be pulling little boys pants down...I'm not even kidding she did it twice in the playground today  Sorry for hijacking your thread OP!

I don't yet but my LO is only 4 weeks old.

All of the books you read though say the best way to teach your LO is to say NO.

Ask her again in a few years when she has children & I'm sure she'll be saying no too

I use no with lo but most of the time she will stop, laugh and carry on with what she was doing in the first place :)
