my doc did an ultrasound (internal) when i was only 4 weeks (2 week old fetal growth)... i KNOW he will do another today (only 5 DAYS later)... we didnt see anything last time, and i doubt we will this time bc it is so early... i am kinda pissed that he i even does this so early because it is upsetting that we cant see LO.... should i ask him why he feels it is necessary to torture us like this? i think he is just milking my insurance (it cost 126 euro a pop).... then after he sees nothing he acts like im having a tubal or something! i think he might be an idiot! LO's only been growing for 2 weeks 5 days!

ADVICE??!??!??!

seems a bit strange. also puts u thru stress for no reason. i had a scan at 8 weeks and you could see just a dot and a heart beat, id imagine a whole month earlier it would have been impossible to see but i dont know.
i would ask him outright and then make a decision.

thanks, that is what i think i will do. i am going today at 3, ill let you know what he said to cover his tracks!

I agree with cupcake that it'sa bit weird. Maybe he is just doing for the money. The only other thing I can think you could do is cancel the appointment and make another one for when you'll be about 8 weeks.

I don't understand why he would keep doing them so early. I would certainly have some questions for him-make him explain himself!

Wow he is scanning early - I had a scan at just over 5 weeks gestation and there was practically nothing to see then, just the tiniest of gestational sacs! - Most doctors won't scan before 6 weeks as before then there really isn't much to see! - Only reason he should be scanning so early is if you were having pain or bleeding, or if he needed to rule out an ectopic pregnancy but that doesn't seem to be the case so it sounds a little suspicious to me!
-Bit like dentists who put you a filling in when you don't need one to claim the money back!

Have you had prior pregnancies or anatomical abnormalities that he has been keeping an eye on as the pregnancy establishes itself?

I've not ever heard of anyone being upset that they're having too many scans... I would have had one every week if I could lol!

As far as milking your insurance, your insurance company doesn't just pay pay pay without there being reason for it. They keep a pretty sharp eye on doctors and clinics who seem to be doing this and they either quit cooperating with that doc or clinic or they put massive pressure on them to adjust their practices to something more in the industry norm. So you can bet that the insurance company is watching their back like a hawk which makes sure your rates stay as low as possible.

It is certainly your right to ask questions of the doc, especially if he's seemingly keeping you in the dark about stuff, but if he has determined you are high risk for some reason, or if this is clinic protocol, it sounds like you are under GREAT care.

JMHO :)

:hugs:

I don't think it's so much the frequency thats a concern, but rather how early gestation wise the scans are being done. Before 5 weeks gestation really is early! - Generally you don't have a scan this early unless there is any cause for concern or something in the medical history that would suggest the pregnancy should be monitored. If there is something this doctor is concerned about, I would have thought he would have given some indication Scans at very early gestations can cause a lot of undue stress and anxiety because there is nothing on the scan to offer you re-assurance.
However when she is past 6 weeks i'm sure the frequent scans will become reassuring and less invasive as they can be done abdominally.
-Although I do agree, a high level of care IS much more preferable to the alternative!

It's bad enough we worry throughout the first trimester, but your doctor is causing you more anxiety. Tell him that!

BTW, I learned during my first pregnancy how important a good doctor and gynecologist is. I made sure the second time around that I got one I was comfortable with and who I felt I could trust. I will be going back to the same one during this pregnancy.

That is terrible!!!!!!! Usually you would not be sent for a scan before 5-6wks because you can not usually see anything! That is awful he is putting you thru this! I would refuse myself to have it done, as that just is not right and any Doctor should know this and he should be aware of how stressful it would be for you! x

Weeks 3-4 (Gestational age 2 weeks)

The earliest change that can be seen through a vaginal ultrasound at this time will be the “decidual reaction” which is the thickening of the endometrium. The endometrium lining thickens as the blastocyst burrows into it. This cannot always be detected by ultrasound—sometimes it may take a special eye or very good equipment to see this “reaction” in the endometrium lining.

*A key fact to remember when using ultrasounds is that a transvaginal ultrasound can detect development in the uterus about a week earlier than a transabdominal ultrasound.

thanks guys, well i went yeaterday and as SOON as I walked into his office he apologized for the last time, he said he recalculated and hadnt realized how early i was, considering most people dont even know they are preggo yet... ( i guess he doesnt know us B&B ladies who know the moment of conception haha)... he said my blood level was great and everything is fone, he will do another scan on 2 weeks! so i am happy and i like him again : ) i am not opposed to having frequant scans at all, i will love it when there is actually something too see, but when its too early its just disappointing!

so, moral of the story, dont trip out when its too early too see, it really is!

I had a scan at exactly 2 weeks gestation, and they saw 2 pregancy sacs plain as day, I was being checked for an ectopic, that's why it was so early. There's only one now, and I'm losing the other one as we speak.... :( nother story, Bean is fine tho :)
Just cancel your appointment and reshedule.... Hope everything goes ok x
