Hiya Ladies,

Hope someone can make me feel better. I went for my 16 week check up with my doctor today. She did the usual, weighed me, urine, blood pressure, listened into the baby's heartbeat.
my blood pressure was low but it always is, should i be worried, i've also lost weight about 4lb since my 12 weeks check up should i be worried. my doctor didn't seem too worried, i'm on a restrictive diet as we conceived with the aid of fertility treatment, and my body showed up in tests that i've to avoid all egg, dairy, wheat and soya products whilst pregnant. so really i have a few questions, should i be worried about the weight loss and....
she told me to lie on the table and started to press on my stomach, i swear it was agony, she was pressing all over, it was VERY PAINFUL. i'm not a wuss, surely that can't be good for the baby. i'm sure she was just feeling for the uterus or something, but oh man???

did anyone else have a painful stomach exam?

sorry for the long post x

i haven't had a painful stomach examination but i found when i went for my 12 week scan that she pressed really hard with the scanner, it was pretty sore and very uncomfortable. i did have a bit of a panic that she had done some damage but at the end of the day they're the experts, they wouldn't do anything to harm your baby. those wee things are very robust and have lots to protect them! x

Hi......well not exactly the same but when I went for my scan last week it felt like the sonographer was driving that thing through my stomach! All day after that my tummy was sore and I was concerned.

Saying that baby has been fine, still kicking etc so I think its hurts us more than its hurts them, dont forget they are surrounded by water so it was probably like a big cuddle to LO.. :flower:

I did not start gaining until I was 24 weeks I was losing as well. My BP is always low as well. I never had my tummy pressed at that stage of pregnancy.

I went to the docs on Friday as I have a UTI and the doc felt my tummy he dug his fingers right in and felt either side of my uterus and it was quite uncomfortable but I'm not worried as I'm sure he knows what he's doing.

It does feel like you've been violated a bit though - think it would help if they could explain if it's your first baby that pressing on firmly etc won't cause damage because stuff like that worries us! x

I always worry too as my midwife seems to press harder than i think she should, but, i think she know's what she is doing.

I would worry about weight gain either, all iseem to hear about pregnancy is that everyone is compleatly different and you really shouldn't compare. But, If it helps I think my weight was gong up and down until about 20 weeks and then i started piling on the lbs.

Yeah I think you could be told that the pressing wont harm the baby - this is my first pregnancy to get to the 12 week mark so had no idea at my scan the sonographer would press so hard, I think a little reassurance, especially for first time mums wouldn't go amiss

Think I would go with you ladies though - they should know what they're doing, a professional shouldn't do anything to damage your child :)

no hun my dr was very gentle and the midwife said he could feel my uterus no prob and he didnt want to disturb anyone (baby)
you need to ask yr midwife about yr weight and blood pressure if yr worried XX

I think the pressing on the tummy is completely normal. When I went for my 12-week neural tube measurement scan, they were bouncing the wand really hard into my uterus to try and get the baby to reposition himself so they could get the right view. This went on for over an hour! I was really surprised at how hard they pressed down in this "bouncing" fashion. Both the sonographer and the doctor did it. But really, think about it - how many times do you bounce around in a day? I do a LOT! Not to mention, there are some women who still jog right up through their 7th month! Your uterus was designed to take the "beating" and your LO is just fine. :)

I was also surprised at the 12 week scan and 14 week appt with the midwife how much it hurt! My stomach was tender for a day or 2 after!

you'll be fine. i took a football in the stomach a few weeks back. Got too close to my daughter and nephew's game. Had an emergency scan and the heart was beating away. Midwife told me the baby is very well protected in there. Some hard squishing and pressing shouldn't cause any harm.

when i went for my 12wk scan it was very painful. I ended up having a bruise bigger than a 50p coin. Went to see the midwife this past wednesday and the babys heart sounded good. I'm now 17 weeks.
