Does anyone think playpens are kind of...cruel?

Playpens are NOT cruel!

I have got one - haven't started using it yet but plan to as soon as my twins are moving around! Would'nt be able to manage with the thought of two babies moving around if I nip to answer the door or something. As Angel said (the other twin mum) it's hard to pick up two babies at the same time.

I think it would be cruel to potentially let my baby be trampled by my two year old. Mother ran a daycare center out of her home when I was little and the playpens allowed the babies to have tummy time without the bigger kids hassling them and talking there stuff etc. I'll definatly have one.

We used a travel cot as a play pan until quite recently, we have a dog so LO went in there when I needed the loo, doing odd chores etc so that they weren't left together unsupervised. She always loved going in there and I would get her out immediately if she became upset, in fact the only reason we got rid of it was that she learnt how to climb in herself and I was worried she'd injure herself trying!

Ummm no..... lol
Its somewhere safe I can put him while I fix dinner or go to the bathroom. Surely it's safer than leaving him on the couch or bed to fall and bust his head open on the porcelin tile? I also let him play in it with his toys as he needs tummy time, but the floor is way to hard to him to lay on and again im scared he will bump his head. Plus I have a female mixed dog, and male german rottie that sometimes get the urge to run through the house. All I need is a salesman to knock on the door, or my husband walk in and they trample all over him. I never leave him in there long and when he cries and wants out I pick him up and figure out something else to keep him entertained while I do my chores.

Simples -

Are playpens cruel - NOPE
Do playpens keep child/baby safe whilst mummy is doing odd jobs - YEP
Are playpens cruel if used as a babysitter, child/baby isnt getting any interactions from mum/dad siblings and left on there own for hours upon hours - OF COURSE

I think the op question is based on her seeing one person using it for in her opinion too long. I dont have one yet, I do think they look like mini prisons some times - but they serve a purpose its as simple as that, and all these things - bouncers, jumperoos, highchairs, swings, rockers and such are all there to entertain baby and give us a minute.

I get why some people say they look like prisons but thats the simple nature of the design! You need an incloser that you can see through and air can circulate through. How else would youu do it?

I think cribs look like prisons more than play pens cause they have bars! Anyway, no I do not think they are cruel. We use ours when we go somewhere since its a travel one and I put her in there to play while I get things done. And as another poster said, I have a sixty pound dog who can get pretty hyper, especially when daddy gets home so I would much rather have her somewhere safe and enclosed so my dog doesn't trample her!

I am not saying I would change them - I plan to get one for my little convict :winkwink: but i think that by looking like a 'prison', gives some people the idea they look cruel. If they were crazy bright colours with flashing lights and had lots of stimuli toys then I think they would get less of a bad name, but they arent they serve a purpose and once a few of lo's fave toys are in there they are great.

I think it's ott that they are no longer called playpens - bc it insinuates imprisonment - and are now called playards.

If the child is happily playing with their toys in a playpen I can't possibly see how that's cruel.

I take my LO everywhere with me...but I can't hold her while I take a shit. That's where I draw the line. And I have two dogs, one who's mostly blind, so leaving her on the floor isn't an option.

Playpen it is.

haven't read it all but i plan on using it for her to sleep while away omg i know so cruel of me. Like really i can't just take a crib with me when away.

Even prisoners have stopped calling prisons "the pen" now a days so unless your little baby is hanging out with some gangster straight out of 1950 he probably wont get the association. Sometimes being so politically correct about everything is hilarious

lol now play pens are cruel? you can never win!

I know! I told my mom I bought a play yard and she was like "a what??" :haha: she still calls it a play pen or baby jail lol. Play yard is such a silly term :dohh:

when youv got a child that can move like lightning and touches everything a playpen is a life saver. easy to put her in for a few mins while i sort stuff out or even pee!! lol
