Does anyone think playpens are kind of...cruel?

Someone started a thread called "The Elephant in the Hospital", about some controversial subject (can't remember what......?). It snowballed from there lol

I don't particularly like them, but I realise they can be useful. They're good for ensuring your LO is safe while you nip out of the room to do something, or if you have a shower or something. At the same time I just put my LO in her cot if I think she will be in danger and I can't be around for a few mins.

I think they're useful if you have older children that may hurt your LO; it enables them to play safely without being hit or run over by the older kids. I am lucky in that my eldest is very careful and considerate around her little sister, so we don't have much of an issue.

I don't think they're really needed though, and if I'm close by I will have my LO on the floor because I know I can semi-supervise. I think it's sad when people put their kids in them for the sake of it; I agree that they keep them safe if you need to be out of the room, but if you're in the same room why can't they just play on the floor? Unless the floor is unsafe, but most floors are fine

i think there good idea aslong as you only put them in there when u need to get things done.

I am a mommy of twins and it's nice to put one in and play while I'm breastfeeding the other. They are only four months as they get older I probably won't use it. But it's helpful ATM.

um how's it cruel i still don't understand that part LOL. I think it's cruel to put huge glasses on a babies face, but to each their own right?
I'll be getting one for ds when he starts crawling so he can play in it while i get stuff done.

Some people can think anything is cruel. If it's not for you, then don't do it, but don't accuse people who do use them of cruelty.

Yeah,i agree the OP is ignorant imo and just down right silly.

I thought "that's a random thing to say"...then I went and looked at the OP and burst out laughing!!!

In all seriousness, the OP's LO looks pretty adorable in those huge glasses :winkwink:

i personally think they are only cruel if they dont want to be in there

playpens=prisonpens...nah I think they are fine if you don't leave them there too long if you need your hands free for a bit.x

We have one. We mostly use it for diaper changes (more convenient for me than carrying him up and down the stairs every diaper change to his crib). Occasionally when Rhys is having a bad night DH will bring him downstairs so that Hannah doesn't wake up and so I can get some rest. He will sleep on the couch and pull the play pen close (after emptying it out) and put Rhys in the bassinet part so he can easily reach him/comfort him as needed (though this doesn't always work poor DH ends up sleeping upright an awful lot these days so he can hold Rhys )

oh and it's a great storage unit for all the crap I don't want on my living room floor :winkwink:

I think it depends on how you use them. If you dont over use them, baby can be quite happy and safe while you have to do something quickly. I would keep the playpen as clutter free as possible so that you know what your baby has access to. Also sometimes you need to put baby down for their safety. Say when you are pouring a hot drink or have to run to the loo and dont want to be rushing up with baby in arms. I suppose its like all things which can be dangerouse when not used cleverly.
