Grace was fed just with boob in her first week, a bit of both in the second and since then has just been on the bottle. I find it hard to keep track on how much she's taking as I feed her pretty much on demand and she will often only drink half of some of them. She will have finished off her third box of cow and gate formula by this afternoon. Does that sound right for the amount she should be drinking?

I would sa so, as you are feeding on demand she will let you know if she isnt having enough, if she is only drinking half she isn't that hungry.

It's a bit frustrating sometimes because she'll make a huge fuss and keep making her 'i'm really hungry' face then only drink a bit and go to sleep or spit it out

The same happens with Hannah....sometimes she acts extremely hungry (even though she just finished eating 3 ounces) and we go make an extra ounce, she'll eat a quarter of it and go to sleep. Or fall asleep while we're making the bottle :dohh:

It may be that they associate the feed with going to sleep. Do they have dummies? They might help if you use them when tired. I used dummies with my 1st son but not with my 2nd, he wouldn't have them.

Use dummies. sometimes she will sleep if i give her it but most of the time she spits it out with her tounge or gets even more frustrated with it because there's nothing coming out of it!

The "cues" for hungry and tired are very similar.

I had the same trouble for tabs snacking all day!! to the point i couldnt go out! lol

tired.....eats hand and sucks fingers and also claws at face/eyes and ears

hungry.....eats hand and lurches backwards rigidly sometimes turing head one side to the other rapidly

Once i realised what was what i have managed to get her into a really good routine 3-4 hours feeding.

She also has trouble getting off to sleep on her own so now we have realised we look for the cues then hold her over our shoulder rocking for about 5 mins until she nods off(only position she likes guessing cos of her reflux)
This 5 mins is well spent and looking for the cues instead of the hours of screaming we had before not knowing what she wanted
xxx

Oh forgot to say also.......babies use dummies to soothe themselves to sleep,if they spit it out but seem happy leave it,dont shove it in again as the shoving in makes them then repeat their getting off to sleep cycle.
yawns.....stares madly.......death scream try getting the first cues of finger sucking, yawning etc
