Does your 4yo wear a pull up at night?

My 4yo has been toilet trained in the day for a long time, but he still soaks a pull up to the point of leaking every night.

My HV said that it isn't something that can be taught, is that right? I know he'll even wee if he falls deeply asleep in the car so he wears a pull up on long journies in the day or on the sofa etc I've been known to stealthily slide towels under him if he falls asleep in the day!! That all points to him being incapable of holding it overnight.

However, the leaking through the pull up at night is getting tiresome. We bought a brand for okder kids but it still leaks often. My husband has noticed that DS has his light on in the morning and is playing with the pull up still on. I want him to wee as soon as hr wakes up but I despite promising he will, he doesn't. :/ it's driving me batty

We have a lot of pee here too, so my boys are in nappies at night. Cheaper too. Sebastian sometimes wakes up dry but it is not consistent. And what your HV said is what I have heard and read too. It is not trainable as it is down to a hormone that needs to kick in. It does this at different ages for different kids.

Lucas is 3 but a big boy and i cant find nappies that dont leak. I bought nightime pull ups, spent alot on them and woke up today.... still drenched.
Whay does he drink before bed? Lucas still has a cup of milk and the nights he hasnt had it he hasnt leaked but its the best way to get him to go to bed eughh.
What nappies do you find fit Dominic Angel?

You've probably already tried this but just in case, have you tried getting him to do a dream wee?

My little boy is 4 in Dec, TTed at 2 and night trained around 6 months later but with one of us taking him for a dream wee when we went up to bed around 10.30ish. He stopped needing the dream wee around the time he turned 3. He still has a water cup that he drinks each night but will wake at 6.30/7 and go straight and do a wee in the toilet. I found with all my kids the dream wee helped them stay dry and then it all just clicked into place easily. GL:flower:

I use the 6+ nappies from Asda's Little Angel range. They are bigger than any others we have tried. They are for 20kg + (44lbs). He is still leaks sometimes but it is really rare.

ETA these are only for Dominic. Sebastian still fits into the Pampers 5+

We've got an almost 5 year old and an almost 7 year old still in pull ups at night. I was a bed wetter until I was like, 8 and one day I just grew out of it and stopped. So, I'm not worried about it. They will get over it eventually. My mom shamed me so much about wetting the bed and I just could NOT stop, no matter what I did. I had a lot of anxiety going to bed and had a hard time sleeping because I knew when I finally went to sleep, I would pee and my mom would be mad. I don't want my kids to feel that way about things they can't control so I won't push them.

People say it can't be taught and I can see the logic in that. But- when my son was nearly 4 he told me he didn't want to wear pull ups any more. He had a few wet beds but after around a week he was dry. We also 'lifted' him to do a wee when we went to bed. I recommend that.
Eta prior to this he had a soaking pull up every night

Holly still wears nappies at night. She uses the Aldi 6+ and it rarely leaks. We are actually moving into pull ups from tonight but not sure how it's going to work because when she's asleep she tends to sleep quite deeply and I don't think she's actually aware of it so we will have to see.

I just left mine and it came naturally by 7. Always nappies never pull ups as they were rubbish.

Violet is in pull-ups at night. She's usually dry and will wake up to pee, but she does have an occasional accident. She actually had some pee in her diaper this morning. She tried to get to the toilet on time, but didn't make it. One thing that helps for her is that we do still room-share, so I can help her to get to the bathroom even when she's too tired to get herself there.

Emily is on the mild end of the autism spectrum & was slow to toilet train, she eventually trained by day at 3yr 10mt, but hasn't cracked night training yet, she wears aldi 6 plus pull ups which I find very good, she very rarely leaks through them but they would be wet every morning.

Both Thomas and Sophie are in pull-ups at night. They were both just turned 3 when toilet trained but Thomas will still wet the bed every single night if he hasn't got a pull-up or nappy on! Sophie was dry at night for many months then suddenly started wetting her bed recently.

It's getting extremely difficult to find anything that fits though.

My four year old isn't in pull ups. He is now reliably dry at night but it has taken a good year to get there and we do still get the very occasional wet bed when he has a big drink before bed. He has been day-time trained since he turned 3 and at that time he started having dry nappies at night, so we took him out of nappies and lifted him to the toilet before we went to bed. I know a lot of people are very against this (and so was I before we did it), but it worked really well for us. He never had problems going back to sleep and he didn't wet the bed.

We stopped lifting him for the toilet when he was about 3 years and 9 months and we now just insist that he has a wee before bed (7pm ish) and he either holds it all night or sometimes gets himself up to wee. He gets out of bed and wees first thing in the morning usually.

You could try lifting him before you go to bed to break the habit of night time nappies/pull ups. For some kids it really only takes a few wet beds to 'crack' it, for some it does take until they are older. If you try for a week or two and there is no change, then there is no shame in wearing nappies at night until they are older. Kids operate on their own schedules!

Mine will be 4 in a couple of weeks and has not needed nappies at night for at least a year now. Was probably ready before, but due to circumstances I didn't want to risk an accident so didn't ditch the nappies until later. We never bothered with pull ups.
I don't think it's a big deal, some kids take a bit longer. I suppose it could partly depend on motivation, but I don't really know.

Mine has been in underwear at night since she was about 2.75, but she is not typical. She could even nurse all night long and still go 12 hours and wake up dry. She stopped nursing at 3 years, 2 months, but we don't restrict fluids before bed and she stays dry all night with no problem. It is one area we have been very lucky as she is quite the spirited and difficult child.

Rio is dry at night but still sometimes wets himself during the day due to pure laziness! I noticed he was dry at night before he was staying dry all day actually. He would wake in a morning with his nappy completely dry then do a big wee as soon as he woke, I found that out one day whilst bed sharing and felt his nappy warm up by my leg :haha: Perhaps Micah does that?
From then on I just made sure he went to the toilet before he went to sleep then as soon as he woke reminded him to go to the toilet. He does that by himself now. We've probably only had about 4-5 wet bed accidents in a year or so.

I wouldnt worry. My 12yr old is horrified he wore a night nappy till 6 lol but I can confirm I never night trained and he has not wet bed x

I fully agree that this can't be taught but do think a dream wee would help. My ds1 was dry in the day at 2 but took much longer to be dry at night. Ds2 who we potty trained in exactly the same way refused to wee in a nappy at night once he was dry during the day and takes himself to the potty at night as and when he needs to. We didn't do anything differently or encourage him to go to the potty at night it's just something he wanted

A dream pee would not work for us. Once the boys are awake at night it usually takes them ages to fall asleep again. We shall just have to wait it out.
