Hi ladies, haven't posted on here for quite some time. I am 15 weeks along with my second baby. Got my downs screening result back today at 1 in 260. I am 29. My result last pregnancy was 1 in 2800. Nuchal fold measurement was 1.4mm so I am wondering why the risk has come out so much higher this time.

Advice/experiences would be much appreciated

Xx

I think it must be connected to your blood test results, as my nuchal fold was much bigger than yours (2.1mm) and I'm 35, but after the bloods my risk came back is 1 in 2100. I can't remember what it was with DS1, but at that time we only had the NT measurement, no bloods done.

What is the threshold for 'increased risk'? Have they offered you any further screening? :hugs:

I don't know why doctors use quad screens anymore... It's outdated. Maternity21 is covered by most insurance and gives a definitive positive or negative for trisom-13, 21, &18. I would request maternity21 asap if my odds where that high.

In the UK the quad testing is the norm. I should Imagine the maternity21 test is specialist and not covered under 'norm' for NHS. I'm not sure it's offered at all as once in 'high' risk (which does vary from county to county) they'd do additional tests and scans

Try to remember 1 in 260 is 0.38% that there's a problem, and conversely 99.62% that everything is ok. That's still really good stats....

The risk level from low to high risk is 1:150 in my area under the NHS so based on those results you are still considered low risk.

Thanks for the replies ladies. We don't have the m21 blood test here in the uk so that's not an option for me.
Got my next mw appointment Thursday so will have a chat to her about it. I know I'm still technically in the low risk bracket it's just its such a big difference from my last pregnancy that made me query it really.
Thanks again xx

You can have the blood test like in America but it's not covered on the nhs. It's available privately and costs around £400.

Yep I agree with the subseqent poster... you can have it done in the UK, it is marketed under different names (Harmony/Nifty).

I actually paid £500 for mine and results took two weeks but I opted for this because of my age (40) and for me, it was worth every penny.

Your nuchal measurement was low - definitely chat to your midwife for reassurance :)

Had mw appointment on Thursday and she reassured me about the result. She basically said don't pay too much attention to the number, the best indicator is the nuchal fold measurement which was nice and low. She said hormone levels and hydration could have affected the blood result and I'm still in the low risk category so to stop worrying. She said she had a 19 yr old recently with a score of 1 in 8000 who had a baby with downs so its just a statistical tool. I feel better now. Thanks for your advice ladies :) xx

My results was the same as yours in my last pregnancy. There still good numbers hun. It basically means if you had that very same baby 260 times then one would be downsyndrome. I had the amnio and my baby wasnt downs. She had IUGR and sadly died at 9 days old :nope: But was really happy with the amnio results xx

My genetic counselor had warned me about that! She said when you're low risk the first numbers will be like 1:2000 like mine were, but she said expect those numbers to change a lot with the second draw, because your hormone level increases :) she said if you start off low risk. Chances are the second one will be low risk. So I wouldn't worry! The T18 is the deadly one. That's the only one I worry about

I posted a thread like this after my Nt with this pg. 1 in 252. I spoke to my midwife and she got the screening nurse to contact me and discuss/explain my results and it made me feel a LOT better :) x
