Drawers vs. Draws

I'd pronounce it 'draw' (rhyming with door) and spell it 'drawer' but when I read it, the voice in my head says draw-er :haha:

THIS!! there are alot of words i say 'normal' yet when i read them i say them using all the letters :haha:

i dont think its as much how we pronounce it, i think its also to do with how our accents make us say it maybe?

i agree with the pp (sorry i didnt memorise your name) who said it doesnt annoy them seeing bad smelling and grammar on things like social media, forums etc. im really bad for it i never use the ' in word like dont, but yet if im writing a letter for work i always use proper spelling, grammar and punctuation.

I can't even make it rhyme with any of those words - heck, half those words don't even rhyme with each other when I say them! Aaaargh lol!

One I really can't say is Karl. How the heck it is a different name from Carol I don't understand :p

Haha too funny! I guess accents play a big part. Karl and carol to me are totally different.

Karl and Carol are completely different to me too, Karl rhymes with snarl and Carol rhymes with barrel to me.

I think mines is all down to my West of Scotland/Glaswegian accent ... I hate how scummy I sound when I'm around people who aren't local!

Some slang also really gets to me - my oh once called "windows" "windaes" (pronounced like "windy" as in windy day with an s ...) aaaargh! And he called "snow" "snaw" to rhyme with thaw ... We had words.

And as for pp who says draw rhymes with door - I don't get how that's possible lol. I have tried but my mouth can't even form the word if that makes sense?

... At least I can say loch properly though :p seems to be the only word I can probounce correctly!

Yeah same for me too!

I know one thing though.. this thread is confusing me.. :haha:

I know they technically are different names. I know they should sound different. They sound different in my brain when I hear others say them. But when I form the words they both come out rhyming with barrel. It's because I roll my r's too much and overemphasise it. Even when I say "car" it comes out as "carrrrrr" lol. That's just a Scottish thing though!

This reminded me of The Walking Dead :haha:

Also I'm gonna need you to record yourself or something because I can't work out how you're saying drawer.
Like, if I say drawer as in storage it's "draw", and if I put the "er" on the end it'd be "draw-er" (though it sounds very odd when I say it). However if I'm saying drawer as in as person who draws, then I say it "draw-rer". I'm very confused because I thought everyone did this

How do you say prayer?

Door and draw totally rhyme to me 😂

What a funny thread ☺️

I say it like "pray-er" - don't tell me it is meant to be just pray now? lol

I'm completely lost now, what rhymes with prayer ?! 😳

Prayer to me rhymes with pear 🙊

How have we gone from roar to pear?! 😂 pahaha.

with prayer again, i spell it prayer, i read it saying the ER but if i was to say 'lets say a prayer' i say it as prere (weirdly- kind of like prayer but i dont pronounce the Y) its harder to explain when typing it rather than saying it

Prayer also rhymes with pear for me!

Accents and dialects are funny things

The Carol/Karl thing is most definitely Scottish/west coast. Just like a lot of Scottish people will say defin-ATLY (real emphasis on the end) rather than just definitely :haha:

Draw and door don't rhyme in my head, prayer and pear do though!
