DS5, soon 6, will start in first grade in less than a month...And I am dreading it. We only had him in pre-k at 4 for 3 months and then took him out for a number of reasons (he was very well behaved, but his skills regressed, and we were living far from the school).
I am worried of all the sickness he'll bring home, especially with a newborn at home; he won't be learning all that much academically, and might regress again - he is doing 2-3rd grade math, including multiplication, etc. His spelling in English (and German and French for that matter) could use improvement however lol. And I am worried that school will turn my loving sweet innocent boy that is very self-confident into a superhero loving boy who doesn't feel good enough in many ways (his large motor skills are not that great, and he is small for his age, and will be in a class with older kids). Plus, we have to move to that dreadful place called suburbia (I'll have to start driving again). Hating it all. Wish we could just homeschool him and keep him home with our other two, but we've already paid the tuition. Just a rant!

I think you need to take a deep breath and relax.

Firstly its unlikely he will bring much sickness home at all - in the two years DD has been at school she has had one day off (and that was with chicken pox) and the attendance of her classmates is similar.

In terms of regression I take it you are sending him to a private school - talk to them it should not happen they should be able to take him forward and focus on what needs developing (motor skills).

Then I have to say school will change him he will become more independent and start to socialise and he may change what he likes by following his peers but thats ok its a learning experience.

He will be fine. Its us as parents that suffer!

he will be fine, academically Omar is not benefitting from school but they do give him extras, I still work with him at home to keep him challenged.

As for large motor skills, Omar is (was) the same, I'm honestly concentrating on sports those days, he goes to private gym class with a personal trainer, he goes swimming and karate, once school starts he will go to football classes at school again. He is benefitting from those classes, it is building his confidence. He used to sit all day to read or play with his toys, now he's more confident in his physical skills he invents his own obstacles at home to practice high and long jumping using links and connecting them to chairs and the legs of the trampoline.

For us school is for socializing, now he can make new friends easily when we meet new mummies.

As for sickness, he got sick once last year only in the flu season in September.

Try to relax and my advice work on his weaknesses rather than working on the things he's already good at. Good luck xx

My daughter spent her first year of school sick. She brought everything home with her :( I dread this year, I really do...
