Hello ladies,

Just a quick query about driving.....how long after your section did you get back to driving? And does anyone know how it would affect your insurance?

I'm 4 weeks post c section (well, nearly 5 weeks) and I did actually drive myself to the doctors this morning (15 minute walk versus 1 minute drive!) and I felt fine, no pain or twinges whatsoever. But I am more worried that if (touch wood) any accident were to happen would I be covered by my insurance? Plus I am sick of having df and other family members telling me I shouldnt drive yet coz they said 6 weeks, as if its a magic number and before that date theres no way I will physically be able to drive lol!!

According to the doctors you are allowed to drive plus minus 6 wks after the procedure coz thats when your womb goes back into its position. I on the other hand also drove about 2 wks after my 2nd baby was born but didnt drive far distances.

I drove 4 days after having Thomas, and 7 days after Sophie (emergency section and then planned). I don't have insurance so not sure on that part, but driving was easier than walking.

I drove 3 weeks after my emcs - I rang the insurance company and they didn't give a clear yes or no answer as to whether my insurance would be valid - they said if a doctor thinks you are fit to drive than that's fine and to be honest I felt like I could drive! I could drive better than I could walk!x

Thanks ladies, I figure there's no harm in it now, I feel fine driving and like you day it's probably easier than walking somewhere!!
I would phone my insurance company and ask them but they'd probably say no and then I'd feel bad if I did drive, so as long as I don't know either way I'll feel fine lol!!

I used to work in car insurance. You really do need to speak to your insurance provider. The company I worked for, you were not insured under certain providers before the 6 week check up. IF you were to have an accident, you would not be covered at all. Just because you feel ok, you need to give yourself time to heal internally. They don't recommend 6 weeks just to be annoying, it really is safest. If you had to do an emergency stop you could cause all sorts of problems if you're not properly healed. If you don't ring them to find out, and something was to happen, you would be driving with no insurance. Please check with your individual provider about their policies.

I drove 4 weeks after, because that was when I was signed off by the doc. I could have driven much sooner. This time round I emailed my insurance company to ask the score, and they have said as long as I feel able to I can drive when I want to - I've kept the email just incase! Every insurance vo. is different though so just give yours a buzz to check.

My insurance said I could drive as soon as my doctor has signed me off but its usually 6 weeks. So I went in to my GP surgery to ask about being signed off at 4 weeks, by then I was feeling much better. I wasn't planning on driving far, just to the shop ect but they said they don't sign anyone off before 6 weeks :( I was so upset!! Thankfully, my partner hasn't had much work on so has been home quite a bit, normally he works away. So if he wasn't here I'd be pulling my hair out. I have driven to tesco once which is literally up one road. But I haven't wanted to risk going anywhere else. I've only ever had one accident where some old guy drove in to me and that was only 5 minutes away from home. So accidents can still happen when you just 'pop out'

I hit the 6 week mark on Sunday but don't have a GP appointment until 8 weeks so I might have to call them and see if they can give me the all-clear.

Make sure you are signed off by your GP as else the car insurance won't cover you. I am having the same issue. Good luck.

Def. worth going sooner, I was signed off at 4 weeks, and at the appointment she had me lay down and push my foot hard (like I would if doing an emergency stop) and was happy to sign me off after that. This time round I'm thrilled that my isnaurance co. have said I can drive when I feel fit :)
