Ive not really posted in this section before, but i just found out im pregnant again after a mmc in march. I have an early scan booked for next tuesday 20th and should be about 8+1 but i think i will be a few days out because of irregular periods.
Anyway, i was wondering, can they see enough detail around that time from an external scan? They have told me they will try anyway but id rather just go straight in with an internal scan if theres not much chance of seeing anything. Slightly less of an agonising wait while they set up the internal then!

Thanks, Holly x

Hey, with my MMC my baby died between 8 - 9weeks, this showed on an external scan, however the lady had to mega zoom in... but you can see it.
She also did an internal, but this is loterally seconds to prepare for, as its all part of the same machine.

I had a scan at 8+1. They tried an external but couldn't get a clear view. Then they sent me to empty bladder. Of course I thought the worst and that they were only going to do the internal to verify no hb or whatever it was they were hiding from me. But they done the internal and there it was my little baby with a heartbeat.

They will try an external but dont panic if they change their minds. Obviously the whole point of the scan is to reassure you and if they cant get a good view it defeats the purpose. They will have the internal ready to go while you go to the toilet so its not much of a wait.

If you are very slim it makes a difference. I would be of the rounded variety so that prob made it harder to see.

Good luck for your scan. :hugs:

I had a scan at 8+4 and saw baby and heartbeat with an external scan.

However at 12 week scan today had to have an internal as I have a tilted uterus and they could not get a clear enough pic to nuchal fold measurement!

I'm only 7+3, and I've had 3 early scans.

- 1st was a dating scan, this was @ 5weeks - internal
- 2nd was to check we had a heartbeat @ 6+5 - also internal
- 3rd was a reassurance scan after getting into a tussle on a sardine-packed train, this was @ 7+1, and was external. I'm quite a big girl, but with a full bladder you could see the baby and heartbeat quite well.

At 8+ weeks, you shouldn't need an internal, but if they do ask for one, don't worry, some people are harder to scan than others, and some babies just want to play peekaboo inside of you!

Hope it goes well x

Hi sweets, with Ruby  I had an external at 8+1 and was really clear and great. With this little one at 7+5 we could see a little splodge externally but they had to do an internal to see my ovaries (apparantly I was INSANELY gassy ) and the pic was much clearer. Don't worry about setup time for changing over, they'll just drop the abdo scanner and pick up and lube the internal - speedy :)
