Hi, my 2 nearly 3yr old son has always had tons of earwax, I could clean his ears in the morning and by evening or next day his ear would be covered again. Sometimes if u look in his ear it's clumped together and you can see balls of wax or long bits of thick wax sticking out. I've mention this to docs before but have always been ignored. Recently my son has been referred to speech and language therapy, he speaks perfectly fine at home but in nursery won't utter a word do they are referring him to help him speak outside of the home. I have no concerns about his hearing but when being refered they always ask for a hearing test to be done. I took him yesterday and the lady couldn't do the test cause of the amount of earwax, I have to soak cotton wool in olive oil and hold it to each ear for 5 mins twice a day then he will need them syringed. Prob I have is he hates his ears being touched and me holding cotton wool in his ear is causing him to become hysterical and I can no longer do it, I've tried treats I've tried distraction and nothing works.
Anyone know of drops I can give him. Doc said there was drops and spray but as he's only 2 she said I could only do the cotton wool. Anyone tried anything else for ear wax on a 2yr old

I've used drops like Murin or Debrox before; they are a type of peroxide that helps dissolve/loosen the ear wax build up. Probably the main concern for a child at that age is the sensation may totally freak them out. It feels pretty weird, like bubbling up in your ear and very full of liquid. Then you rinse it out after it stops bubbling. I'd imagine if it's already difficult just holding some cotton wool there, there's no chance he'd be okay with how the drops feel.

Could you just do it while he is asleep? My son is almost 2 and has the same issue we just wait till he is almost asleep and one of us will put the little cotton ball in while the other holds him then we take it out before putting him in bed.

Otex ear drops are good or simply olive oil. A few drops in a night which will help to loosen the wax and help it to come away naturally so you can wipe the exterior with a wet wipe or face cloth. Cotton wool just adds fibres in to the ear, and personally for me the sound is vile so I wouldn't tolerate it. My son has a similar issue and has lumps of wax come away at times. A would invest in a pillow protector though as the oil comes out and ruins the cases and pillows xx

I know that you can use LIGHT mineral oil and drop it in the ear. It's from the pharmacy and it should be really cheap. Make sure it is LIGHT, I think the other one is for constipation or something. lol

Thanks everyone, unfortunately theres no way he could stand the sensation of ear drops and doc has just recently said he can't have drops at his age. We tried the olive oil on cotton wool while he's asleep but that's not doing anything and keeps waking him up, I'll have to go back to docs to see what I can do

All 3 of mine have crap loads of ear wax and the older 2 have passed their "before school" hearing tests just fine. Thomas especially has truck loads. The doctor said it is good and normal, and wax is there to keep the ear canal clean.
