Hey,

I am looking for some advise - I will be having my EC and ET in the next week and I need to decide whether to transfer one or two blasts, please god we get to blast stage and have at least 2. The clinic said because of my age (28) they would prefer to transfer 1 blast but in the end it is up to us.

Does anyone know of the stats of transfering two with positive results? And if 2 are transfered what is the chance that it will be twins?

I really want to transfer 2 as does my partner and we are not worried about having twins - i suppose the only thing we are worried about is the risks to the babies if it is a mulitple pregnancy!

Thanks so much

I personally would transfer 2.. i mean i find it is double the chance of success transferring two..

I am awaiting ivf and if they give me the choice i am 27 i will be asking for two, we only get one free cycle so if i can have the option of having 2 put back i will agree..

Good luck in what ever you decide xx

I think that is a personal decision although you should take your clinics guidance into account.

Im going for 2 but im 10 years older. Like you, i have no worries about multiple birth (other and increased risk to babies and myself!) I put decide on the day on my forms but after speaking to an embryologist (who recomended 2), i changed my decision.

I was told that 2 does double the chances, but rather, increases the chance of getting pregnant by 5%.

We have just gone through this. We are having frozen transfer cycle, and have blastos on ice. We were given a 30% risk of twins (I am 37), so we have opted for SET. Obviously the risks would vary depending on age and embryo quality. The risks of twins aren't just to the babies, but you too. It makes for a high risk pregnancy, and risk of complications, both with pregnancy and birth are high. I am a midwife, and given what I have experienced in my career do not want twins, which is why we have opted for SET.

Having 2 does not really double chances, as each embryo has its own % chance of implantation. Its so individual, and only you can decide if you are willing to take the risk. Whether you have SET twice, or 2 embies at one try does not increase your overall chance of pregnancy, just saves on time and money.

Good luck and let us know what you decide :flower:

Hi what clinic are you with? Mine said they will do two with a 2day transfer but only one with blastos. Think i will push for 2 even then if i have them. Fingers crossed for you x

Thanks guys for your replies.

My partner is a bit worried that something could happen the babies if it was a multiple pregnancy, as am I. Is the main risk of multiple births that you wouldnt be able to carry them to term and there could be complications if they were delivered early?
It is such a huge decision and I have been looking up on the internet the risks etc but they dont go into huge detail. Most sites just say how there is a risk to the mother and babies - they dont say if the pregnancy would have been risky even if a single one because of factors unrelated to multiples etc.

I suppose i will just wait and see how many eggs I get and how many get to blast stage and try and decide then.

Thanks again
:)

missp - you must be having a private go, is that right? On public treatments there is no real option for 2 blasts back in as far as I know.

I think the key here is the blast not the number. E.g. it does not double chances but chances of pregnancy in general are 40% higher if you transfer a blast as opposed to a 2day embryo for instance. And with each blast having its own % chance to implant but it being so much higher than with earlier embryos then the chances are indeed statistically far higher!

If I could have a choice I'd transfer 2 blasts in a hearbeat myself. Good luck with your decision.

We were told blasts have a higher chance of implanting hence them only transfering 1 and we are going private. Not sure if we will risk going to blastocyst range as I thought it was a good idea until my clinic told us they has just seen a couple who lost all 5 embryos at 5 days so I am hoping we get enough for 2 at 2 days. I don't want to put you off it was just the warning they gave me that less chance of the embryos all making it to 5 days survival of the fitest I guess. Let us know how u get on x

Yes Oneday, on the other hand it's the same thing. Most likely, if they had transfered any of those 5 they would have still all arrested on day 5 inside the womb. Many times the embryologist's lab culture is better than the womb in terms of medium and without the stress of the transfer so they have the best chance to get "cooked" while in the petri dish and IMO, the ones that fail to make it to blast would have failed anyhow if transfered. I strongly believe that within a few years blasto will be the only choice for IVF as it's a lottery to transfer anything sooner.

my ec et is in april im 30 the clinic said just to have 1 put bck in cos of the risk of twins but it runs in the family so il b havin 2 put bck in double the chances of it working
