Hi Ladies

Was any of you diagnosed with excessive amount of amniotic fluid (Polyhydramnios)? I had a 36 week scan yesterday and the sonographer said that my fluids are on a high side. Deepest pool measurement was at 9.5cm i.e. above 95th centile. From what I've read everywhere Polyhydramnios is starts from 8cm & up. My consultant didn't seem that worried, had a good feel of my bump and said he could feel the baby everywhere. Also, the baby is bang on average, not large. Still, after stupidly reading loads of stuff on the intranet I am really worried now and just hope my baby is well and healthy. I was so excited yesterday about the sweep in 2 weeks and today I'm just so worried :(

Its good that your consultant wasn't worried x

They told me I had too much fluid the last time.. everything turned out fine though :)

I have it. Diagnosed around week 30. I've had to get weekly ultrasounds to measure levels since then. As long as it's being monitored they say it's not a problem. And they also say do not read anything about it online!! Most cases there is no known cause and everything will be perfectly fine! Try to find the positive, at least we get all these extra ultrasounds to check in our our babies every week :)

I just asked about this today as one of my pockets of fluid was 7 something. The sonographer said they don't worry as much about too much fluid, it is low fluid that is more of a cause for concern. Hopefully they will monitor you closely so you have some piece of mind.

I was diagnosed w it at week 32! Usually late diagnosis of poly usually can be caused by diabetes (im type 1 but gestational causes it too), or just a larger baby (my lo measured 6lb 8oz at 32 weeks!)...if they notced it earlier in the pregnancy that would be more cause for concern. Some babies just get large so they pee in the womb lots more.

The thing that sucks is it has caused me to measure 44 weeks at 35 weeks :( very uncomfortable and super super swollen everywhere! Im ready to pop!

I got diagnosed with it this week. They didn't tell me the largest pocket size but they did say my afi was 28 cm and cut off is 22 cm. The dr I saw told me horrible things but my OB called the other day and reassured me that since the baby looks fine (other than being big) that it is probably idiopathic.

ahhh thank you all for all the reassuring answers. it's good to know that this problem seems to affect more girls out there and that the results very often turn out fine and reason remains unknown. I feel a bit better about the whole thing today. my consultant didn't ask for any extra scans so I won't get to see my baby until he's born. But i do have a sweep in 1.5 weeks and really hope it will start the labour. All the best luck to all of you. I hope your excessive fluid will turn out to be fine in the end xxx

Yea are u swelling in other places too? Ur legs, ankles etc?

hi, not really. my bump is still quite small and neat and i only get tiny swollen ankles every now and then - most of time after a full day at work which I thought was normal at 36 weeks xxx

I have GD and wasn't formally diagnosed with excessive fluid, justntold it's on the higher end. Dr on Friday told me my level is a 19---baby is measuring at the 46th percentile so not too big at all. What is annoying is that when I try to find out more about it the answers are not helpful. I said what can happen w it and he said "well it's probably because of the diabetes." also I was told 2 weeks ago at my growth scan that they noticed an increase in fluid, this week nobody told me anything and I to ask. That makes me think there is nothing to worry about but also makes me a kittle uneasy

Most of the time a cause isn't found however it can be caused by some serious issues which is why its monitored closely. They tell u not to Google because some of these things are so rare but they do happen. Dd had poly and it was caused by a condition called choanal atresia. The bone in her nose hadn't formed properly inside so there were no airways for her to breathe. Babies cannot mouth breathe as newborns so there was a high chance she could have suffocated if she hasn't started crying. The doctors had to force an airway through her mouth with tubes and a ventilator until an operation fixed the issue.

I'm not trying to scare anyone but so many times on here I read that poly is nothing to worry about and people think the doctors are being too cautious by wanting to monitor or induce etc because of it. There is also a high risk of the cord becoming trapped if your waters go wit a gush before baby is engaged which is likely if u go early because you are so swol!en .

I was diagnosed as Polyhydramnios at my 28week growth scan. I'm having fortnightly scans as my last x2 babies were classed as having IUGR.
My pockets of fluid are measuring 9cms + and I feel huge. Baby however is below 25th centile. I have not got diabetes but I'm totally swollen almost everywhere ! Of course I googled and scared myself silly, in just keeping positive that NT results were very low risk (I'm 37) and they've seen her swallowing on the ultrasounds. But saying that I'm also aware that Polyhydramnios can be a marker for other problems, as well as waters breaking early, and cord compression. A tip in the event of this I've been told is to get on all fours with bum high in the air! My next scan is Thursday so I'll be interested to see how it's going !

I was diagnosed with polyhydramnios on Tuesday with my levels being 28.4cm.
I was taken to birthing and assessment suite and monitored and bubs seems to be doing well.
I was 30+2 at my scan and she was measuring 31+2 and approx 1.7kg.
I've been told I'll have another scan around 34 weeks and if my fluid remains high I'll be admitted to hospital on bed rest. They've also warned me about my membranes rupturing, cord prolapse and the placenta detaching. Also said I'm now high risk for preterm labour.
I was induced with the first daughter, she was 7lbs 7oz at 40+1. I'm so anxious incase I go into labour early.
Hopefully being induced early at 38 weeks anyway due to a pelvic condition. Find out in a week and also if I'll be having a c-section.

I noticed a few of you girls had your sweet bubs, were they early?

My best friend was diagnosed with this at 30 weeks, she was over the 98th centile and measuring well over the amound of fluid she was meant to have, she ended up having her baby a week ago on sunday 4 weeks prem, I just don't think her body could cope any longer, but her and her little boy are both doing great!

I had this with my 2nd baby. It was discovered at 38 weeks. I didn't have gestational diabetes, and I had a text book pregnancy no issues. My fluid level was above 98% crazy high. Because of this my daughter kept flipping and doing somersaults. She was breech one minute and head down the next. I was induced at almost 40 weeks b/c they were concerned of a cord prolapse, if my water broke on its own at home. Broke my water while she was head down, and 6 hrs into my labour she flipped breech again. Ended up with a csection. However she was a healthy baby girl!! No issues.

I've just got my next ultra sound through te post and it's not til the 17th April. I'll be almost 35 weeks, this will be 4 weeks and 3 days since my scan at 30 weeks diagnosing me with polyhydramnois. Do you think going 4+ weeks between scans is ok?

I had my baby at 36+6 but not due to the high fluid...bubs was too big and ran out of room and pretty much there was some crushing of the cord....she was 10lbs and 22 inches..! So the reasoning behind my excess fluid was her just being very large... She spent a week in the nicu for low blood sugars and sucking but other than that shes perfectly healthy! Just big :/

I had my baby on 3/3 at 34 weeks. She had some lung issues partly due to being preterm but also bc her lungs were very wet. We just got out of the hospital Wednesday. Other than her lung problems at birth, she's had no other problems. No cord prolapse or abruption. My water broke sitting on the couch. And it was a flood.
