Bit of a silly thing to ask but i need some closure :D

Im pretty confused about this .. i have green eyes and rest of my family have either blue or green.. and mason my son has bright blue eyes. I got told babys are all born with blue eyes and then they can change? whens the colour likly to stay from as hes 6 month can they still change or will they stay blue or around that colour? .. my ex has brown eyes and i thought that was a dominant colour so i thought mason would have got them from him? or can he still have blue eyes even with the ex having brown lol?

Just a little confused about it i thought mason would have brown

If your ex has one blue eyed gene and and one brown eyed gene he will have brown eyes because the brown is dominant. However he can pass his blue eyed gene on to your son, and if you have passed a blue eyed gene on as well your son will have blue eyes. You need two blue genes to get blue eyes, but can have a brown and blue gene to get brown eyes. The green is more complicated - if you do a web search for eye colour predictor there are some good sites around i think. i am not sure when the eye colour changes for good - your son is still quite young though.

I would expect them to stay blue if you can't see any brown in them x

It's difficult as they can change up to 3 years, but usually with a colour like brown that usually changes before 6 months. If it's going to change to green that can take a bit longer.

My sister has brown eyes, my BIL has green and both their kids had blue eyes, lol. The oldest (3 years) has just changed to green.

I'm pretty certain eye colour is affected by more than one gene so is a little bit more complicated than just 'one parent has this eye colour, one parent has this eye colour, baby has dominant eye colour.'

My dad has brown eyes and me, my bro and sis all have blue eyes. A mate has brown and her kid has blue. Brown aren't half as dominant as they have you believe! If they are blue they will stay somewhere around that. they wont go brown now xx

I expected my son to have brown eyes (because my ex does) but he has my blue eyes :flower:

Eye colour is actually quite complex. My sils sons eyes are brown, his sisters blue. Same parents, sils are blue her dfs are brown. Otherwise the kids are very similar.

Both my brothers and my sister all have brown eyes, and I have blue/green. It's strange how it worked out - our dad has brown eyes and our mum blue.

Wow :)
i think there going to stay blue maybe gone abit green iv noticed today close up there bluey/green xD so its kind of strange but amazing :) xx

Eye colour is determined by alleles (as are all genetic characteristics) of which we all possess two. Which means that you pass one of the two you have to your child as does your partner, brown is always dominant over blue which means someone can have brown eyes but their genetic instructions are for brown and blue (the brown overruled the blue in their case) but their child can inherit the blue. If the mum also gives a blue to baby then they will have blue eyes, so two brown eyed parents can have a blue eyed child but two blue eyed parents can't have a brown eyed child. Thats a very basis explanation and its a bit more complicated because there are lots of intermdiate colours and their dominance is mixed/varied but you get the idea. Colour can also change up to about 18 months.

mari72 explained it perfectly. Two blue eyes, unless in very rare exceptional circumstances can't have a child with brown eyes, but two brown eyes can have a child with blue eyes.

My boy who is now seven had bright blue eyes until he was about 8 months old. His passport states that he has blue eyes and there is no mistaking on the picture. They turned a shade of green and brown, and his definite colour since he is about 3 is hazel. His sister has blue eyes. I have blue eyes, their dad has brown.

If someone has brown eyes, he may have inherited a blue gene and brown (so eyes will be brown as dominant), but if he has a baby with a blue eye girl, he has 50% chance his baby will have blue eyes (as is the case of my children). If he inherited two brown genes, then even if his partner has blue eyes, the child will have brown eyes (but his grand children could possibly have blue eyes). If two parents have brown eyes, but both have inherited a blue recessif gene, then their children have 25% chance of having blue eyes.

All very confusing but quite fascinating!

Basically i have green eyes and rest my family have blue or bluey green no trace of brown even grand parents etc were all blue/green, my ex has brown eyes and as far as i know most of his family have brown :\ .. i just thought my son would have brown eyes but hes got the brightest blue eyes ever! but from what iv saw they could change still yet but if not he will have my families eyes :)

I have greyey blue eyes and FOB has brown eyes. Isaac's eyes are exactly the same colour as mine. I thought he'd end up with brown eyes, but I'm pretty sure they're going to stay greyey blue! =]
