Any of you girls been involved in the family nurse program? I've just signed up a little later than most at 21 weeks, I'm keeping a very open mind and fully intend to make the most of it and take full advantage of the help, I just felt a little patronized at my first meeting, not by the nurse herself, but the program in general. Did anyone else feel this way? And how have you found it since?
Thanks ladies. Xxx

I have no experience of it, but just wanted to say, I'm an older mum and found that pretty much everything I read and classes I went to were hugely patronising. I think it's just that when people write these types of program they have to assume that the people it is aimed at know absolutely nothing and that way everybody is catered for. I just bit my tongue and kept on with it, I learned some stuff I didn't know so it was a worthwhile exercise.

I'm glad there are programmes out there to help younger mums who face a huge amount of additional unnecessary stress, hopefully you'll get some use out of it!

Hi! I did the family nurse programme with my son and started around 21 weeks also, we are saying goodbye to out nurse next month as our son will be 2. I couldn't rate the programme enough! I was so unsure to start with at our first visit but I would keep doing it for another 5 years if we could I grew such a strong bond with out nurse and I would call her for any help and advise and she would do her very best to help in anyway she could! Give it a go, it was the best thing I ever carried on with as I really wasn't sure! Hope it goes just as well for you! X

I was 19 when I fell pregnant, and I got offered the programme.

I didn't want to take it, i live with my OH, I do not consider myself a "teen". But i signed up to it. I found it Hugely patronising and offensive. I told the nurse this, who stopped giving me the paperwork and just comes fornightly to see how we were. She comes once a month now if that, and its to weigh him, have a cup of tea and check he is progressing well. Luckily my FN was really sweet and realised I didn't need her help and backed off a lot.

At the end of the day though, i have called her a few times, she checks out rashes, helped me get the right help when he had severe reflux, and the weighing was so helpful in those first few months. I would rate it in that sense. if you think you can put up with the paperwork and stupid pictures and "feelings" stuff then i'd go ahead. Its free help a lot of people aren't privileged to recieve. and just someone else to talk to, makes you feel like you are not alone. I spend majority of our visits bragging about all the stuff he can do! Most people would get bored but its her job to listen haha!

Never even heard of a family nurse program! I had a different program called Healthy Babies Healthy Children after my first was born, and I found it very useful, just a hassle with so many appointments and home visits.
