My midwife is a big fan of the birthing ball - it opens your pelvis up to help baby descend and puts your back in a good position. She said just sit on it with your legs wide apart (like riding a horse!) instead of a regular chair, then you can bob back and forth, up and down and do wide circles or figure 8s with your hips. It obviously hasn't put me into labour since I'm overdue, but it does relieve back ache and my baby's position has improved.
Spicy food is a myth unfortunately. The idea is that if it stimulates your bowels and gets them contracting, your uterus might contract along with it. So for it to work you would have to eat hot enough food to give you an upset stomach, probably not how you would want labour to start anyway.
