I thought this may get more answers in baby club than formula feeding section

My LO uses tommee tippee standard CTN bottles and until 3 days ago was on slow flow teats. He started taking ages over a bottle and falling asleep so we tried medium tests which seemed ok. Then I went to buy more medium and saw vari flow which said suitable from birth (whereas medium says 3months) so I bought those.

The flow does seem much faster but during the day mostly he seems able to cope with it and we get through a bottle in about 20-30 mins rather than 45 so not much faster! There was some leakage round the sides but it's not too bad

Thing is he's never been a colic baby (touch wood) but he seems to get distressed or fidgety during some bottles and we have to work hardto get wind up. Mainly he seems to be straining down below to try and pass wind during his bottle which makes him go red in the face and get upset

Last night he was like that the whole time during his 4am feed then proceeded to throw the whole lot up at 5am in his basket :( This morning he's taken a good bottle but is still squirmy and seems to strain and now has a high pitched cry

I just want to know I've made the right decision switching to vari flow or if anyone has been there and had suggestions? Strange thing is its not every bottle and often he is fine so OH is keen to keep trying

EDIT: since being on formula (from age 3+ weeks) he has bowel movement approx every 2 days now and it is green paste-like

I don't know hun but green poo doesn't sound normal, I'd get him checked out.

I was gonna say that a wee visit to the dr could b needed. i doubt the bottles caused bad wind etc. in fact we found vari flow to help with wind cos lo could control speed of milk flow. sorry i've prob not been much help xx

I was wondering about the vary flow. As far as I am aware, how much and how fast the milk comes out depends on how you hold the bottle. So maybe you accidentally turned it to a setting that is too fast?
When my boys were the age of yours we used bottles with 2 holes which was one more than the ones they had from birth. The ones for 3 month +, which we are using now, have three holes. We use Avent bottles though so I am not sure how the Tommee Tippees are graded.
As for the the poo, green does not sound normal to me either. It should be yellow. I think you should go see your GP. Hope it is nothing though and your LO feels better soon! xxx

Green paste like poo def sounds like he has an upset tummy, Jas had that after eating blueberries the first time. As your LO isn't eating yet I'd give the Dr a call. Sounds a little bit colicky.

Personally we didn't use the vari-flow teats as i'd heard bad things about them. So we stuck to the normal teats and we've never had problems.
Maybe try going back to the other teats and see. They're not very expensive so maybe give the 2 a go... The age is only a guide. If your LO seems to need a faster flow then try moving up.

Def give the Dr (or NHS Direct if you're in UK) a call though hun to see what they think. Better safe than sorry.

Hmm you all have me worried now! He's had green poo for 3 weeks ever since switching to formula. He is fine in himself no temperatures, smiling lots and sleeping well. Do you think it's a problem?

I wouldn't be panicked hun. It just sounds like he may have a slightly upset tummy. You may need to change his formula.

However on a babycare website this is the advice on poop:
When your baby is bottle fed

CONSISTENCY: Soft paste.
COLOR: Grayish green, yellow, tan OR brown, depending on the type of formula.
FREQUENCY: Once (sometimes twice) every 1 or 2 days.

What formula is he on? My LO is on C&G comfort formula & green poop is totally normal with it....maybe call the careline for your formula & they should be able to tell you if its normal or not!

My LOs poo turned a bit green when we tried aptamil comfort milk but it said on the packet that that's normal. We switched back to normal aptamil cos the comfort didnt work for him and it went back to yellow.

He's on SMA gold and literally the day we changed it went greenish - sort of dark green/brown and hasn't changed since. Someone told me it was possibly due to higher iron content?

Then that sounds like a normal formula fed baby poop :)

It's completely different to BF. Much thicker and darker.

green is quite common in the "gold" formulas- its caused by the extra iron in the formula- get your LO checked out if you are worried- but in my experience green poo can be completely normal

From the sound of it hun you might need to try them on a different milk. The vari flow teats wont do that to him (as long as if its the numbered ones you have the right number/mark underneath the nose). Try changing the milk you use to a different one, and if after a week there is no change then a trip to the GP is advisable. May be lactose intolerant or just not able to deal with a normal baby milk and need a more gentle formula x
