Hey everyone :) I have my first doctor appointment tomorrow, I'm nervous and excited at the same time. I just want to make sure all is going well with my little one :) I suspect I'm around 8 weeks now. Do they do a ultrasound/check heartbeat that early? I really want to get that done but not sure if they can do it that early, or if I can request it. What else can I expect to happen?

Hi hun,

I would't expect too much to be honest; I'm not trying to crush you I just want you to be prepared.

I went to my first GP appointment with all the hopes of tests, confirmations etc, but she asked when my last period was, if I was taking folic acid, whether I smoked or drank and then said I could go and she would write a letter.

I was very disappointed and expected so much more, but it's usually the midwife who does the in-depth appointments.

xx

I think its different depending on where you live.
I've seen a lot of girls on here posting their early u/s and chatting about hearing the baby's heartbeat early on, but where I'm from, not much happens until your 12 week appt

My first appt was with my midwife @ 7 weeks. She spent just over half hour going through our questions and some basics.
We'll see her @ 10 weeks and get all the bloodworks done.
Next appt is @ 12 weeks and we get to hear the heartbeat
U/S won't be untl 18-20 weeks for us :(

I had my first appointment with an OB in NY at 9 weeks. Things that were done:
- filling in lots of paperwork about medical history and then going through this with OB
- discussing any concerns etc with OB as well as what structure appointments will take throughout the pregnancy
- given advice on screening tests to check whether baby healthy
- given advice on what can/ cant eat and do during pregnancy etc
- given information pack on recommended prenatal, yoga and child care classes in the area
- having height, weight, blood pressure, blood and urine taken
- an internal exam and a pap smear
- best of all, a transvaginal ultrasound for dating purposes and estimated DD- got to take a piccie home too. :)
- some light discussion about their approach to labour and delivery, but not in much detail (seemed more relevant to discuss it at a later stage).
- they also answered some questions that DH had as he was present for the whole appointment

At the end of the appointment, I was given a referral for my 12 week ultrasound at the hospital where I will be delivering.

I felt I came away with a lot after my first appointment and was very happy with everything (so was DH).

My doc did say that it was probably too early to hear the heartbeat with a doppler at that stage, which is why a transvaginal u/s was done.

Good luck tomorrow Alicia! :flower: Let us know how it goes!

I'm having my first exam tomorrow too and I'm super excited and nervous all at the same time.

Question - for those who have had a transvaginal ultrasound done, was it painful or was it just like getting a pap smear?

Its not painful at all. Dont worry. The scanner/probe thing is not very wide and they put lots of lube/gel on it so you barely feel a thing. If you've had sex, you'll cope with it fine! :)

How did your appointment go today Alicia? Hope you got a lot out of it. x

It wasn't painful at all, they did a pap smear and that was more un-comforable then the transvaginal ultrasound. Although I did have spotting afterwards and she said that was perfectly normal and I may have it a few days afterwards. Although it stopped the next day.

Doctor appointment went great :D I posted an update here (with pics and video!!): https://www.babyandbump.com/pregnan...nt-share-our-8-week-ultrasound-pic-video.html
