I had my first appointment with an OB in NY at 9 weeks. Things that were done:
- filling in lots of paperwork about medical history and then going through this with OB
- discussing any concerns etc with OB as well as what structure appointments will take throughout the pregnancy
- given advice on screening tests to check whether baby healthy
- given advice on what can/ cant eat and do during pregnancy etc
- given information pack on recommended prenatal, yoga and child care classes in the area
- having height, weight, blood pressure, blood and urine taken
- an internal exam and a pap smear
- best of all, a transvaginal ultrasound for dating purposes and estimated DD- got to take a piccie home too.
- some light discussion about their approach to labour and delivery, but not in much detail (seemed more relevant to discuss it at a later stage).
- they also answered some questions that DH had as he was present for the whole appointment
At the end of the appointment, I was given a referral for my 12 week ultrasound at the hospital where I will be delivering.
I felt I came away with a lot after my first appointment and was very happy with everything (so was DH).
My doc did say that it was probably too early to hear the heartbeat with a doppler at that stage, which is why a transvaginal u/s was done.
