Hi Everyone.

This is my second time being pregnant. I had a miscarriage in Oct. 2007 @ 10 weeks due to a blighted ovum. :(

But I am now pregnant again, at about 12 weeks on Friday.

I had my first full physical and blood work today, and I only have my first scan at the end of April! (which will put me at 18 weeks)

Doesn't this seem kind of far along for a first scan??

I think they are booked right up and cannot get me in sooner. Last time I had a scan at 10 weeks. (Actually the day I started miscarrying, coincidentally.)

When has everyone else had their first scan?

He isnt even going to check for a heart beat for another 4 weeks, because he said it is hard to hear at this point. :(

My doctor advices me always to have a really early scan. He is a private doctor and as having medical insurance covering private doctors/clinics I just take advantage.

I had a blighted ovum at the end of November was discovered at 6w. I had to wait to see if they could see something and after 2 weeks miscarried it.

I told my doctor that next time I would like to see the baby at 6w or else I will drive myself crazy.. he said that it's the best thing to do as if something is wrong it will not wait and action will be taken ASAP.

If I were you, I would do a private u/s mainly because of my conscious. But then again you are the one who knows best.

I wish u good luck and I will pray that this time everything is healthy. :hugs:

Here is Aus, you only get one scan which is at 18wks. Thats only to check that everything is ok and you can find out the sex if you like. I know in private health cover you get 3, but the scans are expensive. I got my bubs heartbeat checked @ 12wks, but they said they may not be able to find it. Luckily my bub was co-operative and they found it straight away.

i get my 1st scan at 12 weeks although i'll be13 weeks when i go and then 1 at 20 weeks. I also went to one at 8 1/2 weeks just to make sure all was well but i had 2 pay for that early scan! They should really try and fit u in earlier than 18 weeks i would have thought. x

First scan at 8 weeks, the next one is at 12 weeks...
It's different with every doctor and person and country...
Hang in there xxx

Yes, it most certainly is different in various parts of the world.

Our first and only scan is at 20 weeks, so mine is April 15th.

Of course, the waiting, the hearing of all the wonderful ladies on this forum having scans, etc. made me anxious for mine so I booked my first private 3D scan for the 20th of this month :)

I had one done at 13 weeks but it was a complete surprise, didn't think I was going to get one until 20 weeks (my OB ended up sending me for a dating scan). I think it reallly depends on the area you live in as to whether they do the early scans or not.

It is a long time to wait... can you not get them to at least listen in to the heartbeat a bit earlier. Given your history, try pushing for a scan for reassurance.
Congrats & Good Luck :)

I'd say try and push for an earlier one.
I thought they usually checked earlier when there's a history of misccarriage.

I had one at 8 weeks. Then another at 11 weeks because of a previous loss. Then my 3rd one this week at 15 weeks.

It defintely differs from country to country. I've read here how different it is. I also have medical aid.

I would def push them for an earlier scan because of your previous loss.:hugs:

Hi Wendino

Congrats on your BFP.

I too had a blighted ovum last March and when I was, I think, 8 weeks, I felt the same feelings as last time so went to the doc, who gave me a scan. All was well and he asked me to go back the following week, all was well. He also gave me an injection each visit, this is why he gave me a second scan so soon. It only cost us 20 leva (bout 8 pounds). I have my next scan next week when I will be nearly 13 weeks.

Not sure what is normal as I have never been pregnant whilst being in the UK, but from what I have read on this forum, I think each country and each doc is different. If you want an earlier one, try asking a different doc or hospital, you never know.

My doc has been great, he dealt with me last year when I had the B. Ovum, also I think it's cause I'm his only foreign patient!! :) Preferential treatment???? Who knows, as long as bean is ok, I'm happy

Good luck with everything, let us know how you get on
