Well,

My baby boy, Sean Allen, was born yesterday at 33+5. He is doing well. He was born via emergency C-section after failed induction due to severe pre-eclampsia.

He is doing well. We were able to get steriods in, which may have contributed to his better-than-expected lung function. He currently has a cannula on, but they are taking it off this afternoon because they say he is doing well. I finally got to see him and hold him this morning! He is beautiful.

I am confused and scared quite a bit. I was planning a natural homebirth and expected him late. Now I have to adapt to a preemie, and heal from a section, which I knew nothing about. I was totally not ready. I didn't have a hospital bag packed (I planned to have it by 36 weeks) or anything. I went to a doctor's appointment Monday afternoon and never came home.

I have been meaning to post here because I need the support but the magnesium sulfate they had me on gave me double vision that close up. Now they have me off that but they moved me to some oral pain meds and are trying to get me off the epidural, and now the oral pain meds are making me feel a little loopy.

Anyway I am scared and inexperienced and have been an emotional wreck the past week...I just wanted to reach out.

Sorry you're going through this hun I had a similar experience with my first, although I had a natural birth. Like you, I found it very hard to come to terms with the shock as I had a textbook pregnancy up to that point and it had never crossed my mind that he would come early.
Just wanted to offer you some hugs and support. If feels like your world is turned upside down now but in the long run, the chances are that you little man will have no ill effects of being born early.
I'm in this forum again now as have just found out I'm expecting our second so I'm looking to find others who are pregnant again after having a premmie.
I hope your son continues to thrive and you all get to go home as soon as possible. xx

hi there, congratulations on your new baby boy!!!!

I'm sorry things haven't turned out the way you expected, it's always a shock when you're expecting one thing and it never materialises.

I had magnesium sulphate before and after I had my youngest son, Jude. it hurts doesn't it! I remember feeling more than loopy for about a week after his arrival, although I only had it for 48hrs. it can take a while to leave your system, and im sorry to say it also gave me chronic diarrhoea! allow yourself time to sit and rest your brain, try to sit and stare into space for a little while each day. recovering from a major op, having a prem and being sedated will take its toll. it's completley normal to be emotionally unstable, I know I was. talk as much as you can, let yourself grieve for the birth you didn't have, then pick
yourself up and dust yourself off. iv had pre-e very, very severely twice now and have spent time in the ICU after two of my births. it's a frightening time but you need to remember that your safety and well being is just as important as your sons and you need to make sure you rest.

I hope both you and your new baby are feeling better soon. Thinking of you. xx

Congratulations!

It is really scary being thrown into the preemie life at first. Just take it a day at a time. Heal. The mag was horrid. I felt like I was on fire from the inside and couldn't keep my head up.

Let me/us know if you need some support. You don't have to do it alone.

Thanks! Yes, the mag was horrible for me. Took all my stregnth and now they are not feeding my LO yet due to his mag levels from when I was in labor, hopefully tomorrow they can start feeding him to get him start gaining weight so he can go home eventually.

Congratulations! I hated the magnesium sulfate too. It made me really hot and I had extreme thirst. The nurses were bringing me water and 2 apple juices at a time and I was chugging them. I was soooo dizzy when they stopped it and let me get up around 22 hours after my c-section.

oh golly i had forgotten about the on fire on the inside! I got that in my arm when they were administering it. and the extreme thirst, golly that's true. I was desperate for strawberry Ribena so sent my OH off to get some.... it was torture only being allowed a little when you're so desperately thirsty!

hope you and LO are ok today OP xx

Hello There! Congratulations on the birth of your bubba.

Ive come back on here to ask / read up on development for my now 9month old premie. Your story has brought a LOT of flash backs, felt like i was reading my own story!!!

I visited my midwife on the monday 32 weeks gest for a routine check, i was sent to hospital with suspected pre-eclampsia. I had to stay in hosp for 2 nights before being sent home on a high dose of labetalol and told to visit the local mat unit for monitoring. By the Friday 32+5 i was back in hospital with severe stomach pains. It turned out my liver was failing fast and when my BP hit 193/105 the consultant said right thats enough this baby is coming out now.

I too had no hospital bag packed, i thought i would go to 37 weeks under monitoring and then be induced even being diagnosed with pre eclampsia. It was a complete shock and i remember my body shuddering and shivering with shock as i was being prepped for surgery. I too had magnesium sulphate which made my face feel like it was on fire! what was that all about? very scary and worrying! Id opted for an epidural so hubby could come in with me, but the anesthetist couldnt get my bp down and they ended up having no time to wait so i had to be knocked out :(

Ava was born 32+5 at a healthy 3lb 5oz, she had cpap for 24 hours and a canula drip for 3 days. She was only in nnu for 17 days which was great and home with me at 35 weeks.

Ive just popped back to check on what i should expect for her development 9 months on as shes not sitting yet etc. It is a daunting at first, and although they are tiny and precious they are complete fighters. Im a first time mum too.

Stay stong, keep reaching out for support, its all around xxx

Oh wow I guess it happens like that a lot. I had to call my little sister and direct her to pick out everything I needed for my hospital bag and then have my MIL bring it to me....My BP stayed reasonably down so they were able to do the epi for me. They even said the epi would lower my BP (I don't remember if it did).

I guess I had different expectations with pre-ecampsia. My mom had it with my younger sister and I remember she was just fine until one day she was feeling terrible, went to the hospital, and my sister was born at 34 weeks a day or two later. It doesn't help that my mom passed away last summer. It would have been SOOO helpful to have her advice and her experience. I mean, I was 6 years old when this happened!! Also, her support for breastfeeding would have been helpful. No one else in my immediate support group has ever breastfed.

I figured if it was JUST pregnancy hypertension, I would go home on meds, but pre-eclampsia is extremely dangerous so they usually deliver ASAP after you get it.

Even of the magnesium, I remember I felt A TON better after he was delivered. I was miserable before, got the epidural, and came back to the room all perky calling people to announce his birth. I was much more clear headed after.

On a great note, HE IS GOING HOME TODAY!!!!!!!!!!

:happydance::happydance::happydance::happydance::happydance:

Congratulations! Going home is the best. And of course, the best is yet to come <3

Hi, congratulations on your little boy! So glad to see how well he's done and is home :)
I had a very similar experience to you.

I had my son in 2008 at 36weeka due to pre-e, I managed an induced natural delivery.

8 months ago I had my daughter at 33weeks via emergency c-sec under general anesthetic , I had suspected pre-e from around 28weeks, daily hospital visits, admitted at 32 but things got very bad very quickly, no time for induction.
The magnesium was awful! The heat, the thirst, the dizziness!

My littl girl has done amazing, been a bit behind with things but is doing great! I'm sure your little one will do just as well :)

Enjoy him :) x

woooooo!! so excited for you!! be warned it is scary when you're at home and you realise all the monitors, nurses etc arent there and your mind starts buzzing with worst scenario type things. it takes a while to adapt but soon it all becomes natural. Such a milestone welldone both of you! :D tell us how your nappies go
