Flagyl (metronidazole)

Hey girls-

Has anyone been prescribed this to take for bacterial vaginosis?
I was prescribed it yesterday by my doctor for a possible infection and after
reading up on the drug this morning (metronidazole) I am now too scared to take anymore. I am supposed to take the medicine twice a day for 7 days (500 mg each)...I have taken two pills at this point.

I read that this medicine is category B which means there have been no studies done on pregnant women only pregnant mice and no known harm but it also said this medicine was teratogenic to the fetus.
Teratogenic means Of, relating to, or causing malformations of an embryo or fetus.
One woman I had read started taking it at 12 weeks (which is me) and the baby had died at 14 weeks.
The doctor looked at my smear in the microscope and said he saw no yeast and if there was bacteria is was a mild case and he would prescribe me something just incase. Would you guys continue to take it...It would kill me if I did something to harm my baby!!!!

hi hun, i had to take it in my last pregnancy but i was in 3rd tri. if you are worried hun, i wouldnt take it but i would go back to see your dr, explain your worries and see if there is anything else you could take x

This is what it says in MIMs, the Australian medicines book-

Metronidazole- should not be given in the first trimester of pregnancy as it crosses the placenta and enters fetal circulation rapidly. As its effects on human fetal organogenesis are not known, its use in pregnancy should be carefully evaluated. Although it has not been shown to be teratogenic in either human or animal studies, such a possibility cannot be excluded.

Maybe 11w5d is ok though! BV has been associated his a higher rate of miscarriages/early labour which is why maybe your dr decided to treat it. I would probably discuss it with my dr to see if I really needed it. Hope all goes well xxx

I was given flagyl before but not for bacterial vaginosis. I'm sorry you are going thru this it's so annoying whether pg or not. I hope you feel better soon. Did you tell doc that you're pg, if you look it up online I am sure you can find all the facts about whether it's safe or not, I'm not sure what to say here but I do hope you feel better soon and figure out what you can take. xx

I was on flagyl during my 4th week of pregnancy (before I even knew I was pregnant). As a matter of fact I was convinced it was flagyl that was making my period late! (hehe)

Thank you ladies! I really appreciate the input...yea since I'm borderline 2nd tri I'm debating on continuing to take this drug again tonight.

Bacterial Vaginosis Primary SymptomsVaginal discharge: The discharge is usually yellow or green, but some women have noticed a gray or even white discharge with BV.
Vaginal odor: The odor is the most common and noticeable symptom which smells fishy. If you notice this odor, you have Bacterial vaginosis and need to seek treatment.
After sexual activity: The vaginal discharge will be increased with the same odor.
Bacterial vaginosis Secondary SymptomsSwollen vagina
Vaginal itch
Pain during sexual intercourse
Urination is painful
Burning sensation in the vagina
Irritation of the vagina

I only had the terrible smell but even that was only noticeable during sex. No other symptoms. Just glad it is gone though!

Can you ask for an alternative medication?

The yellow cm is probably just increase in progesterone. A home remedy would be plain oatmeal cook it like you would eat it only plain no added ingredients and place it cold on a length of plastic wrap and incert in your undies like a pad and let it sit on the outside of your vagina for a while. You can do this upto 3 times a day. I have yeast infections all the time and when I don't have money this works well.

I get BV all the time... BV is said to increase pre-term labor and birth if it isn't treated so I've always taken it. My last pregnancy I took it 4 time and my son is totally fine. It is your choice though

How did you know you had BV? What were your symptoms?

I took it on my last pregnancy around 16 weeks and with this one at 7 weeks, I have complete confidence in my OB and am sure she would not prescribe anything that would be dangerous.
