I have been unable to get my LO to latch on as my nipples dont stay erect for long enough. He is so inpatient, he screams after seconds of trying and admittedly I just give up, I cant take it. I have been feeding him formula but really want to breastfeed. I have managed to express a couple of bottles and now my breasts are leaking LOADS! I am soaking my pads.

Can I breastfeed with flat nipples? I dont think I can which means I cant BF

I had flat nipples before my first son and I would pinch them to make them erect then latch him on, and in a month or two they were permantely sticking out and still now are. I did suffer with cracked nipples which I thought was from flat nipples but I've suffered again with it this time so I don't think it was down to flat nipples.
Are there any bf counsellors in your area?

Also you can buy things to suck out your nipples, I think I saw lansinoh did one in mothercare. Keep trying!

Please get some nipple shields, they really do work wonders!

I got a nipple shield at the hospital and it helped me LOADS, they are plastic nipple covers that extend your nipple out, just make sure to get the correct size for your nipples.

Do you leave them on when you BF?

I have nipplettes which pull the nipple out but as soon as I take it off, the nipple goes back in. LO cant feed through these.

I vote nipple shields to. They are plastic nipples that fit over yours and helps baby latch and suck. I used it because he had difficulty on one boob and now occassionally use it on both when he gets frustrated works great.

They also have things to collect your leaking milk to, check out babiesrus.

So when you BF, you leave them on and LO will hopefully latch on and suck via the shields? xx

My LO was 7 weeks premature and didn't have the sucking reflexes of a full term baby, add to that my flat nipples and trying to BF was proving a bit of a challenge.

The neonatal nurse recommended a breast shield and since then Evan has been feeding great

I just got mine from Boots, it's a Medela one. I didn't realise you can get different sizes.

Yes, you leave the shield on whilst LO is feeding. I think my is a god send, I definitely wouldn't be Bf Evan if I wasn't wearing one during feeding.

nipple shields were a god send to me with flat nipples.... I then fed my daughter until she weaned off of me at 10months

Hope you are having more luck now xxx
