Hi Ladies,
DH and I are in the process of seeking fertility help as we've been TTC baby number 1 for some time now without any success.
I went this morning to see my GYN/OB for an ultrasound of my CD 12 follicles. It was a preliminary test to see whats happening in my ovaries leading up to O before he recommends any treatment/course of action.
He advised me that my lead follicle is too big for what it should be on CD 12 (he said it should generally not be bigger than 1.87 and mine is 2.41). I'm not on any fertility meds so I'm not sure why this is. Anyway, to cut a long story short, my GYN/OB said that due to the size of my lead follicle (and the fact that all the others are really small) I can expect not to ovulate this month?:dohh:

I have to go back next week for him to perform another ultrasound on my ovaries to see if in fact I did ovulate.

Has anyone else had an experience like this? What was the outcome for you? Does anyone know why a large follicle would not ovulate?

Thanks for any advice or information you can give me... I'm pretty gutted right now.

Best wishes & baby dust :dust:

Not really sure but, if your follicle is to large to ovulate, that is most likely the reason you have been unsuccessful. If it's been happening every month. Could be completely wrong though.

No advice, just didn't want to R&R.

When I was on clomid I frequently got large follicles of around 26-27mm, they still gave me a trigger injection and AF came two weeks later but I don't know if I would have ovulated without a trigger. I've never had an ultrasound during an unmedicated cycle so I might produce them at size normally for all I know

From what I have read, any follicle over 25mm (so yours is borderline?) is classed as over ripe, and often larger follicles are deemed as cysts - follicles filled with water rather than a viable egg. I think follicles grow 1-2mm a day. I'm no doctor but at my last appointment I had a 23mm follicle (and a 16mm) and was told I would ovulate in the next couple of days and that all looked perfect.....

Good luck on your journey

Thanks so much for your thoughts/input Princess Lou & Sugarpuff. It's so hard to not get your spirits lost along this journey.

Thanks a million for not reading & running!

Best wishes to you both xx

Thanks Dazed125... I really appreciate your response also. I just had a positive OPK and some light cramping around my RHS ovary (which is where my GYN/OB said my lead follicle was) so I'm hopeful (and praying) that perhaps I may ovulate early this cycle? Not due to ovulate for another 2 days, but stranger things have happened!

Fingers crossed for us all.

Best wishes to you xx

That sounds a bit strange. I don't really know much about this but I can tell you this cycle I had a 22mm folly on CD13 and my doc was very pleased with that. The past few cycles I've had follies around the 20mm mark and have been actually o-ing around day 12 or 13. Crossing fingers for you!

Hi PinkPeony,

Thanks ever so much for your response. I'm doing as much research as I can to try & understand why he mentioned that to me this morning. Hoping he's wrong!!

Best wishes to you on your journey... xx

I had the opposite problem this month. I apparently had follicles worth measuring on my CD13 ultrasound and so they told me that I wasn't likely to ovulate either.

I've heard it mentioned a few times that the really large ones can end up being cysts, but I'm not an expert so don't take that as gospel.
