I was wondering if anyone has any experience with food allergies. I recently started introducing solids when dd turned 6 months. She really didn't take all that well to them. I started her with avocado. I remember last I gave it to her (maybe close to a couple weeks ago now) she got kinda red around the mouth. I figured it was just from her rubbing it all over her face with her saliva. The only other things we have tried are oatmeal, sweet potato and zucchinni. Anyway, tonight I gave her avocado again and she ate a little bit and after I wiped her face with washcloth it turned bright red. It was like large splotches all over her face and under her chin. THey were not raised, just red. Again she was rubbing her face with her hands and had saliva and food all over her. I rubbed some avocado on her leg to see if it would have the same reaction and it did not. She got a rash on her face last night also, and she hadn't eaten anything yet. I think she it teething as we were at the drs on last friday and he said her gums are swollen and he expected a tooth soon. She has been fussier than normal this week. Anyway, so I wasn't sure if the rash was teething or allergy. I gave her a bottle and bath and she went for nap. When I gave her the next bottle, a few hours after the avocado, she stopped eating and threw up. It was just once but a lot came out- def not spit up. We cleaned her up and I offered the bottle again and she took it. A couple minutes later she threw up again, this time a couple times and again a lot came out. She seemed perfectly normal otherwise. We gave her a bath and put her to bed without feeding her anymore. I'm going to call the dr tomorrow, but does this seem like an allergy? I'm nervous as I read avocado allergies can be bad and linked to many other foods and latex- which would be a real pain to deal with and scary if she were to stop breathing. Sorry for the long post, but just wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts Oh by the way- the rash disappeared within about an hour. It did last night too- and again , last night she hadn't eaten anything yet- but the rash wasn't quite as bad last night either.

I wouldn't immediately assume that was an allergy, but my daughter did have a lot of that right around 6 months, red sore rash around the mouth, chin and neck, and for us it was teething related. She also vomited a few times that I think were teething related as well (not obviously related to a particular food as it was first thing in the morning as soon as she woke up). They do produce a lot of mucus that goes into the stomach when they're teething, often the result is that it upsets digestion and really awful loose acidic poos come out the other end, which cause nappy rash, but certainly, it can cause vomiting too. Also, starting weaning generally is really rough on the stomach. If you are concerned about the avocado, I would avoid it for a few weeks and see if she continues to get the rash and then see if she gets it again when you re-introduce it (I would wait until after the teeth pop through and she stops dribbling so much, so you know it's not connected).

My daughter did have a suspected food allergy (it seems to have gone away now that she's 2) to pumpkin seeds. The reaction was really obvious and dramatic. She started projective vomiting everywhere, got hives all over her face, her face swelled up red and puffy and her eyes got really puffy and red. She was also sort of listless. It happened on two occasions after eating pumpkin seed butter and it never happened with anything else. In our case, we saw the GP, she advised to eliminate it from her diet until after 1 and then try again. We did and she was fine, if that's helpful.

Thank you so much for your response! I appreciate hearing your experience. I just spoke with the nurse and she said to avoid avocado at until I speak to the dr at the next appt, but that the vomiting usually happens soon after eating, not hours later. However the rash she felt did seem like an allergic reaction. I think will try to introduce it again after a year like you did and see what happens. Thanks again!
