FOR THOSE BORN BEFORE 1985 According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 60's, 70's and early 80's probably shouldn't have survived, because our baby cots were covered with brightly coloured lead-based paint which was promptly chewed and licked. We had no childproof lids on medicine... bottles, or latches on doors or cabinets and it was fine to play with pans ..
..............When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just flip-flops and fluorescent 'spokey dokey's' on our wheels. As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or airbags and riding in the passenger seat was a treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle and it tasted the same. We ate chips, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy juice with sugar in it, but we were ...never overweight because we were always outside playing. We shared one dri
nk with four friends, from one bottle or can and no-one actually died from t

h...is. We would spend hours building go-carts out of scraps and then went top speed down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into stinging nettles a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We would leave home in the morning and could play all day, as long as we were back before it got dark. No one was able to reach us and no one minded. We did not have Play stations or X-Boxes, no video games at all. No 99 channels on TV, no videotape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no DVDs, no Internet chat rooms. We had friends - we went outside and found them. We played elastics and rounders, and sometimes that ball really hurt! We fell out of trees, got cut, and broke bones but there were no law suits. We had full on fist fights but no prosecution followed from other parents. We played knock-the-door-run-away and were actually afraid of the owners catching us. We walked to friends' homes. We also, believe it or not, WALKED to school; we didn't rely on mummy or daddy to drive us to school, which was just round the corner. We made up games with sticks and tennis balls. We rode bikes in packs of 7 and wore our coats by only the hood. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of...they actually sided with the law. This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. And you're one of them. Congratulations! Pass this on to others who have had the luck to grow as real kids, before lawyers and government regulated our lives, for our own good. For those of you who aren't old enough, thought you might like to read about us.

(Stole this of facebook...but thought it was very true...fortunantly im safe being a bay of the summer of 87 - when the world became civilised lol.)

I'm a 1978 baby, this brings back good memories :)

lol chucky egg, those were the days!

i was born in '85 and this was just how i grew up. my future kids aren't getting xboxes lol they're getting puzzles and crayons

I was born in 1980. I loved the 80's. xxx

I was born in 1986 but a lot of this is familiar!

The safety aspect pees me off, there wouldnt not be child caps on things if some child didnt ingest what was in it, same with the lead paint which did damage peoples health. As for walking places the world isnt safe any more. Things have changed and not for the better. I was outside loads as a kid to playing, something kids dont do now because of the variety of things on tv and the internet. Even when you try and make outdoor things for adults I found no one cares or has any enthusiasm. Everyone's a couch potato now .We had vid games to, I was born in 82 and had a sega and a sinclaire. We also had better weather then to, it always rains now all summer here. Parenting has shifted again to and not for the better.

LOVE IT! i LOVED my childhood and thats brought back some good and bad memories - the bad being when i fell head first into a pile of stingy nettles my face wasnt a pretty sight hahahahahah !!!!!

1983 here. Yep life seemed far less nanny-state back then and to be honest much better, though I guess people always look back on "the good old days" with rose tinted glasses, no matter which era they were born in.

I was born in 1984 and some of this rings very true! xx

completly agree with the rose tinted glasses thing, the past eras were far from perfect (just look at the saille stuff atm) but i do mourn certian things, being able to play outside, not having your entire life posted on the internet for everyone to see (she says typin on an internet forum lol).imagination and being able to be a child for longer then 5 years!

I was born 1989 and a lot of that rings true my brother was 1984 and id always go off with him lol

I'm a 1977 baby and it is all soooo true!!

I was born in 84 and that sounds familiar.

I could never let my children walk to school alone though unfortunately, even though I used to. I was thinking about this the other day, I don't know if its a case of the world being less safe now, or that bad things get more publicity these days, hence parents are more on their guard. I wouldn't like them wondering the streets with friends either like I used to from a young age. Kinda sad really :-(

I was born in *cough* 1969.
In my day there were no computers segas, gameboys etc. But you did get to play space invaders on huge arcade machines and we had a tv games system called grandstand!
we would share photos on slide projectors that took ages to set up, and there was always one slide in upside down. You watched in the dark.

The first computer we had was an Atari 2600, it was so basic compared to the games consoles out now but we got loads of enjoyment out of it. At the time it was the bees knees!

I was born in 1981 , this post is so true, I feel sad sometimes that my kids don't play outside more, I used to love it, staying out until dark, now all kids want to do is play computer games ect x

Just sneaked in at 1984 but defnately all true for me! I can clearly remember walking to school with my friends at age 5, definately don't think I'd be letting DD do that these days.....
