I'm wondering if my LO had IUGR. She was born at 38+4 weeks and weighed 5lbs 7oz, and was 17 inches long, and the doctors said that she appeared to have been losing weight in the womb. My OB said that my placenta probably died early, although she gave no explantation for why it happened. My LO is now 10 months old and only weighs 17 pounds, and seems to be behind in gross motor skills.

The reason I'm wondering about this is because I'm 11 weeks pregnant with baby#2 and if my DD had IUGR, I want to make sure that I'm monitored more closely this time.

Not sure if you ladies can help, but I'm not sure where else to post this.

Im sorry i cant really offer any advce but my baby passed away at 20 weeks gestation due to IUGR caused by placental failure. Im 20 weeks now and have just had a 20 week scan with good results. Ive had blood tests called sticky bloods to check to see if the IUGR was caused by a clotting disorder which can result in baby being starved of oxygen as it damages placenta but my tests were negative. Ive therefore took aspirin low dose this pregnancy because it supposedly helps the placenta. Maybe you could ask about maybe taking it too. Good luck. Your DD is absolutely adorable :) x

Thank you so much. I'm so sorry to hear about your sweet little angel Jacob. I hope everything continues to go smoothly for you this pregnancy. :hugs:

And I'll be sure to ask about the aspirin at my appointment next week.

I also had an IUGR baby, he was 4lb 8oz at 37 weeks and that was because my placenta was not working as it should. I was given steriods at 29 weeks and from then i had scans twice weekly aswell as growth scans every two weeks, i also had ctgs, blood tests and saw the consultant twice weekly. I have been told if i get pregnant again, i will be monitored really closely but i can't really give much advice. I hope your pregnancy goes well

Thanks Jemma, see that's the kind of care I would hope to receive if this happens again, because with my DD, no one even knew the placenta had started failing until she was born.

My daughter was IGUR she was 1.8kg (4 pounds 5 ounces) at 39 weeks. They tested my placenta after birth and found that it was over 25% dead and not working correctly but really had no explanation.

I am now 17 weeks with #2 and my OB is monitoring me closely, My OB has put me on aspirin everyday until 34 weeks to help the blood flow and function of my placenta. I have my 20 week scan in 2 weeks so this will give a good indication whether this baby is a little behind in growth

Alana, I hope baby #2 is growing healthy and strong for you. I think I read somewhere that you have a 15% chance of having another IUGR baby, so if that's true, then it sounds encouraging. Did your first child have any gross motor skill delays?

Hey Hun. My LO was 5 lbs at birth. They have classed her as low birth weight rather than IUGR as the weekly scans showed that she was continuing to grow, albeit slowly, in the womb, and there weren't any problems with the plancenta when they examined it afterwards. My consultant says that there may have been a problem that went undetected, or I may just be someone who has smaller babies. The way they are handling things with me is that I am currently under midwife care, but will be scanned at every appointment rather than just some of them. If there are any discrepancies at all in terms of growth I will be referred back to the consultant for weekly or fortnightly growth scans as I was the last time (it was picked up at 30 weeks last time) and take it from there.

Not sure if that helps any! :)

See in my last pregnancy I was only scanned at 20 weeks, so they had no idea what was going on, and no way to let me know whether my LO was just growing slowly or if she stopped growing at a certain point. I'm just glad that it wasn't any worse than it was. But I have a different OB this time, so I hope she's a little more diligent.

Hi Spiffy Noodles no my daughter did sit, crawl and walk a little later but other that just really small and petite :)

Well, I met with my new OB today, and she agrees that DD was an IUGR baby, so she's having me take baby aspirin everyday until I deliver, and will be giving me an ultrasound in the third trimester to check on growth. I'm so relieved to have a proper diagnosis and to be getting adequate care!

Thank you for all your advice and experience, ladies! :flower:

I had it with my first daughter. She weighed 5 lbs and 6 ozs, they induced me at 38 weeks. They never really told me anything about my placenta but I noticed it was small... like... a little bigger than a softball. My pregnancy with my second daughter was normal

Glad you had a positiev appt and will be monitored more closely.

My DD was born 5lb 8oz at 37 weeks I had severe Pre eclampsia and I was told she was a bit growth restricted. She was about 8th centile from 4 weeks then up to 50% from 6 months for weight and at age 5 is 9th centile again so definitely skinny, although shes 25% centile height. I'm av height and small build and OH is v tall and skinny. She was a little slow on mile stones e.g. smiling (just after 6 weeks), sitting (8 months), crawling (11.5 months) and avg for walking (15 months). Took a while to talk in sentences (2 yrs 3 months) but can now read fluently and appears academically ahead so she seems to be fine now!
