I highly recommend spatone liquid sachets.

My iron levels at 28 weeks were only slightly under the recommended level at 10.8, but my midwife wanted me to try and raise this. She prescribed iron tablets (pregaday) which I tried for a few weeks but these made me violently sick every day.

I looked into alternative ways to increase my levels and found out about spatone. My midwife agreed I could stop the pills and try the liquid form but said it was not available on prescription. However, i felt the cost of buying these was a small price to pay for the sickness stopping. I started taking them at approx 31/32 weeks at after my blood tests at 36 weeks my iron levels had risen to 12.9. :happydance:

Spatone can be bought from Sains, tesco, boots etc. They cost approx £8 / £9 for 24 sachets. Pregnant women can take 2 a day (I have one for brekkie and one for supper). Its best to take with OJ as this helps the body absorb them better.

Hopefully someone else might benefit from these too.

brilliant news, glad your levels have risen! unfortunately they didn't work on their own for me - my levels dropped from 10.5 to 10.2 whilst taking spatone  i am still taking 2 a day though, but also ferrous fumarate as prescribed, and i'm 100% sure that my iron levels have now risen significantly because of them both as i'm feeling so much better :D. x

Just to add that Holland and Barret do them and they are only £5.99 as i was ill with the tablets as well!

Although spatone didnt help me, boo.My levels dropped to under 10 so I've had to start my tablets again along with spatone. It's is much easier to take though.

xxx

I love spatone too, made me feel lots better than the tablets :)

I'm actually waiting to pick up a prescription for iron tablets from the doctors, but as I can't get there till Friday didn't really want to wait. As my iron levels were only slightly low, the midwife suggested to try spatone.

It's £7.99 in boots, but is currently on 3 for 2, so I got 3 boxes. I don't know if it's making any difference to my iron levels yet, but I do feel a bit better than I did.

When I get my iron tablets I will try them instead of the spatone, but at least I've got something to go back to if they make me feel ill.
