I originally posted this in the 1rst Trimester section and it was suggested that I also post it in the 3rd Trimister section by a fellow member. I hope this OK and that nobody minds. There's really no proper section for my question!

If there is anybody who never tested positive with a HPT/urine test, I would really like to hear from you. Unlike a lot of other people on here, I'm starting to think I'm in denial that I actually may be pregnant. Sorry if the following is TMI!

My last NORMAL cycle was back on March 9. I usually have periods that last 6-7 days, pretty heavy with obvious tissue discharge, bloating/cramping in the first two days and no other real PMS symptoms to speak of. My cycle lengths run around 26-28 days. Following this last normal cycle, I began having very abnormal cycles that are only lasting 21 and 22 days with bleeding that only lasts 3 days...no real flow to speak of, so I'm not sure if you would call this spotting or light bleeding. This may sound wierd, but neither of them had the right 'smell'....I can always tell the day before my period is going to come by the distinct smell (hopefully, someone can relate to this and I'm not the only one that notices this!!!). AND there is no tissue/clots which is very wierd. On top of that, cramps have been lasting for weeks at a time with headaches.

This last episode of bleeding began on April 27th, and was very light with a more watery pink and brown color. I had cramps probably about 5 days prior to any bleeding and it lasted for 2 days....stopped.......then started again for about 2 hours (really pink stuff only when I wiped) and stopped....no tissue/clots the whole time. What bothers me is that the day before this bleeding, I bloated out huge. My bottom abdomen is so bloated that it's hard and when I eat, even if it is a little bit, it's like the bottom part of my abodomen is so bloated that the top gets really full (hope that makes sense). Well, the bleeding has stopped and I am still bloated horribly and cramping off and on. It's wierd b/c I can't suck the bottom part in anymore. Also, my BBT's have never dropped since the last time I ovulated. I've been running a low grade temp for a few weeks during the day (around 99.5). I also check my cervix for fertility reasons and have noticed in the past few days that my cervix feels different. It's super high/soft and is almost like it has tucked itself way up there and is tender.

I've taken numerous HPT's (I was lucky enought to get one of the 3-liner FRERs!) and all are negative. I know my mom didn't get a BFP with my brother using a urine test, but that was back in the 80's, so not sure if that is applicable...but it may run in the family? I'm just scared I guess and don't know what to do! Everything is just so wierd.

At any rate, if you've never been able to test positive on an HPT in your first trimester, what made you think you were pregnant and why did you finally decide to go to the doctors knowing that they would think you are crazy! (This is what I'm afraid of). Please share your experience.

Not me personally but my cousins gf with all 3 of her girls. Urine tests wouldnt come up until around 12 weeks. The best thing you can do is go and have a blood test, the dr isnt going to think your crazy.

Do you know what made her go to the doctors and ask for a blood test? Most women would just assume that an HPT is correct and not worry about it. Did the doctor give her any reason of why the HCG wasn't registering in her urine?

Thanks for responding to my question Calais!

when i was pregnant with my 2nd baby , i had morning sickness and at the same time i was seeing my period , so i went for a blood pregnancy test and it was confirmed that i was pregnant and that all the bleeding was just spotting. so i suggest you go for a blood pregnancy test for an accurate confirmation cos urine pregnancy test does not always show positive until the pregnancy is about 6-7 weeks old, but the blood pregnancy test shows positive even if you just conceived an hour earlier. best wishes

Well her periods were playing up and she was throwing up daily. Same with all 3 pregnancies. Ive never asked her why they didnt show up.

Never happened to me personally, but on a pregnancy forum I used to belong to when I was pregnant with my first son there was a woman who started a similar thread. In her case she wasn't getting a BFP on a HPT - she finally got her BFP on the HPT at close to 12 weeks I believe. There were a few other women who had posted similar experiences. I would just tell your doctor that you suspect possible pregnancy and would like a blood test. Better to find out before you go too long without proper care.

i had a v faint positive on a hpt about a week after my period was due, but had some spotting so was sent for a scan. they done a pt before the scan and the line was so faint it was barely even there, the sono said 'oh i think its negative, but wel do a scan just in case' and lo and behold here i am lol so not quite neg but not positive either. are you getting any kind of line at all even v faint?xx

It's one of those lines that I think is just in my head, ya know? The only way I can see it is in natural sunlight, so I'm pretty sure it's just the antibody strip. I would post a pic, but my phone camera just makes everything blurry. When I had the 3 line FRER, the pink lines popped up immediately and scared the crap out me...lol. Now, I just have the blue dye tests and those are so hard for me read. I just had a yearly exam done in February, so I'm hoping that if I schedule an appointment with an OBGYN that they'll not want to just do that again....everything on my last exam came up perfectly normal....no infections/STD's, cancer cells or obvious cysts ect.

I've been pregnant six times, and have had my period two of those times. I've also had several negative HPT's with this pregnancy, and with my first son. I actually needed a blood test to confirm that pregnancy. So it does happen. If you feel like you're pregnant, and your "period" just doesn't seem like a period, you should listen to your body and get a blood test. Good luck. :-)

Thanks Saturn. What made you go get a blood test? Before I started thinking about this the other day, I always just thought if you got your 'period' that you weren't pregnant...obviously not true, but you get my point. Why did you think to go get a blood test or why did you think you may be pregnant given that conventionally, one wouldn't?

A friend of mine didn't get a BFP on a urine test until she was nearly 10 weeks x

Out of curiosity...do the doctors ever give an explanation as to why the HPT's aren't working as expected? It's in my nature to have an explanation for everything and whether or not this is my case (I doubt it is), it is a really interesting question. I kind of wonder if it has something to do with when the placenta begins to take over hormone production? I've read that this happens anywhere between 8 and 12 weeks...never found a conclusive answer...but I kind of wonder if the placenta helps to produce a different 'type' of hormone. Not necessarily different, but maybe an HCG hormone with a different type of marker than the one that was previously being produced (not sure what produces the hormones prior to this event). It would seem that doctors would have some kind of idea why women like Windmill's friend and Saturn would have issues with HPTs.

No, positive for me, Why amber was a bigg surprize
Tested around 10-12wk gone nothing. routine pill check up, pee test positivem 3 day later scan 19wks gone.

Well, with the son I had the blood test with, I didn't get my period but I kept getting negative HPT's even after being about 10-12 days late. So hence the blood test.

But yes, I've also been pregnant before and gotten a weaker period that just didn't seem right. I also started getting morning sickness, so thought a HPT was in order. That one was positive.

Are you TTC?

Wow MommyToAmber...did the docs have any explanation for this?

Saturn: We weren't necessarily TTC, but weren't trying not to concieve if that makes any sense. One of those things where if it happens it happens, and if it doesn't, it doesn't. This kind of mindset is helping me to be a little more rational about the whole situation I believe. I think if I was TTC that all this wierdness would have me convinced that I was PG.....but at this point, I'm just in denial that there is a possibility that I actually may be. Setting the subjective aside, the objective facts just aren't helping me much! Today, I'm still all bloated and having sharp, but not unbearable pains, on my lower left side. I thought maybe I'm O'ing (only 5 days after this last spotting episode?)....I've been using OPK's for the past couple of days just for more info possibly and they're turning out negative as well (lol...can't get a line on anything!!) I've always had positive OPK's when they're supposed to be positive, so I'm pretty sure it's not ovulation.

I havn't had any sickness to speak of...some general nausea to smells off and on, but I think that could be normal. My biggest complaint are the constant headaches and absolute exhaustion which has been going on for a few weeks now. I've never been one for taking naps and for the past few weeks I've noticed that barely a day goes by w/o taking a nap. Just can't keep my eyes open. Then about 5 days before the bleeding, I had shooting pains in my breast for an entire day. Since then, they've just been sore and progressively more sensitive. Again, all of this could just be some wierd hormonal imbalance that I've accutaly developed!

So your on your 6th child? It must be wonderful having such a large family!

Hi girls.
I dont know if any of you have seen any of my posts but i am going out of mind here.
I came off the pill 9 weeks ago and still no period.
About 3 weeks ago I did several tests and kept getting faint positives or negatives.
So went doctors who in the end sent me for an ultrasound. They said no pregnancy was visible but might be too early.
Anyway, Last thursday i felt the need to test. Something was telling me to. So i did and what do you know a faint positive again. This was a pink dye superdrug one. The line became more visible after the time limit.
I have now done sevreal more tests which are all faint positives or negatives which turn positive after the time limit.
I really feel pregnant. I am aching all over especially in my lower abdomen, headache, backache, nausious and my boobs have killed for days!
Can anyone help? Do you think I am?
Thanks x

Do you have an online chart we could have a look at, and is there any other reason for your temperature to still be up that you know of?

One reason for temps being up is a follicular cyst, which is where the egg doesn't burst out of the follicle like it does normally but stays in a fluid sac. With these your temp stays high after ovulation, but then I think you don't get your period either. These usually resolve themselves by eventually bursting (people often have them without knowing) but if it is causing pain then they can be removed. You can see them on ultrasound.

On the 'neg HPT when pregnant' front some women just don't synthesise the hCG in the same way, it just never gets across to their urine so can't get picked up by the tests.

Oh so you're NTNP (not trying not preventing)? That's probably a lot less stressful than TTC. :winkwink:

No, I've been pregnant 6 times but I'm only on my fourth child. :-)

I hope you get the answers you want in the next little while, and make sure to keep us posted as to if you're pregnant or not.

UrbanBumpkin - I'll update my chart and post it on here...I assume if you just put a link that it'll work? That's what I was thinking is maybe I had a cyst. I had an annual in the middle of February and the doctor said that she didn't feel any cysts and I've never had a problem with them....I guess if they are really small though then maybe I just wouldn't notice? Do these cause bloating, too? I've been so bloated for well over a week now and it feels like I have a balloon in my lower pelvis that just won't pop! Can cysts cause pain in the breasts as well? I would think if they can mess with hormones that it could affect other reproductive-oriented organs. I've had the worst shooting pains in both breasts over the past few days...they feel like they start way in the back and go all the way to the nipple (sorry, tmi)...then just a dull ache the rest of the time.

I found an OBGYN and scheduled an appointment for Monday, but I'm not thinking they will be able to tell me much that day. I told the receptionist that I already had a clean annual though, so maybe they'll plan on taking blood or doing some other diagnostic.

Saturn - It is definitely less stressful than TTC...better for my mind set anyways. Thanks for talking/posting responses over the past couple of days. It's nice that perfect strangers can be so responsive and friendly!
