I just went to WIC (government funded food program) today. They said that my baby should get 26 oz a day. So I started to cut him back a little. They do not support feeding your baby rice cereal before 6 months but my doctor told me to. I was wondering if he gets less bottles because he is eating rice cereal before bed. Also how many bottles when they start eating baby food when they are 6 months?

Never cut back on your childs food intake. Let him eat as much as he wants.
and as far as solids go I believe they still eat as many bottles. Solid food does not cut out a bottle.
Don't take my word for it though.

I would not cut back on the formula at all, feed as much as you can get him to eat!

I personally wouldn't cut back either, but maybe check with your dr. Mine was eating about 40oz a day at 4 months and still is, but she is a big baby. My dr had told me to feed her as much as she wanted to eat (she only eats formula though) I don't know if WIC should really be telling you what to do regarding feeding!

Evelyn gets Solid foods but she still takes about 3-4 nursing sessions / day as well as 4-5 bottles / day. I basically feed her whenever she is hungry. When she drinks a bottle she drinks anywhere from 2 oz to 8 oz depending on how hungry she is. She gets about 40 oz / day of bottle which is just barley on the line where she should be and is considered more what a 5-6 month old should drink and she's still tiny!

Low milk supply so she is not getting much when she nurses that I can tell, but still.

I would say don't cut back. if LO is hungry LO will eat. If LO is not hungry chances are he will refuse bottles and or turn away.

(atleast that is what my LO does when she is not wanting any food / bottle.)

yep WIC told me basically how much is the average (40 oz for a almost 5 month old) Evelyn is only 4 months 2 weeks though. But then they said that babies are different and need different ammounts.

I just take it with a grain of salt b/c in the same breath they told me that bottle feeding leads LO's to being forced to over eat and so they become obese. :coffee:

My LO always turns her head away , or spits the bottle out when she is done so I am not sure what they are talking about there.

My lo is 4 1/2 months and has 4 5oz bottles a day. Sometimes he will take more. Sometimes less but normally just the 4 bottles. He used to drink more. Alot more! Sometimes over a litre a day. But since he has been having breakfast and tea he has cut right back on bottles. I do worry about him not getting enough milk but he soon lets me know if he's hungry!

My first LO took total of 24 oz per day up to 6 months old.

From 6 months, milk should still be there as much as normal but food is an extra on top of the milk.

From 9 months old LOs would generally be on 3 meals, and then it is often that the milkfeeds may drop if LO drops them - however LO should still have around 16oz milk ontop of solids then (my LO had around 12 oz ontop of solids):flower:

Don't cut back just to follow regulations babe! Every babys different :) My LO will drink 5-6 oz.. 4-5 times a day depending what time he gets up. He's 5 1/2 months, but he was born 4lbs 6oz, so he's very small for his age. He's the size of a 3 1/2 month old I think. He didnt get past 3 oz til he was 3 months old. x

See that is why I hate WIC they always make you feel like you are feeding your baby too much. they dont want you to feed them rice cereal until six months but my doctor says four months. they said "your child will be obese if you feed them anything but formula/breast milk before 6 months." i'm like no they will be obese if i feed them mcdonalds all the time and let them sit inside and play video games

This made me :haha: thank you so much for that : ) I needed that today! :) My baby's regular pediatrician said that it is OK to give her baby rice, and when I said I was already doing so she was fine with it ! : )

You cant overfeed a baby, they will just puke up whatever they dont need. Wouldn’t it be great if this was the case for us adults lol :)

Go with you instinct, and ignore advice from professionals. They will always seem to contradict each other.

Alton loves to eat rice cereal! :happydance:

My dr told me you cannot overfeed a baby (contraversial? lol) because anything they don't want/need they'll throw back up :) my LO is 4 months and has 40oz-48oz a day but if you go by certain guidelines that's twice as much as he should be having! I'm sure you should never cut back their food, they need everything they can get at this stage x

WIC offices can be very condescending. We were eligible with our first son eight years ago, and yes, they treat every woman like an idiot. In some fairness, sitting in the WIC offices waiting room for long periods, I began to feel like a rocket scientist so I can see where some of it comes from!:haha:

Agree with all the others. Your baby is too little to have his milk intake rationed, and there is disagreement amongst doctors on the solids thing. Our pediatrician's office paperwork says 4-6 months to start based on the individual baby's signs of readiness. Don't worry too much about it.

We just got back from his 4 month check up and the doc said he is doing good. She said he can eat what he has been eating. She said I could start giving him baby food too which I think he is going to like because he is grabbing at cups and stuff that are in my hands so I think he is wanting more. I am every excited to start feeding him different stuff like baby food carrots and green beans...etc. I decided to take WIC with a grain of salt because they are not doctors but they sure do have options.
