Wondering what formula is best to start out from birth? My son was breast fed for first 6 weeks but due to problems had to be switched to Almintum Formula for protein allergy. With this baby I want to start formula off right away. Ive been looking and the Enfamil Newborn..should I get powder at first or liquid? Also how do you make them up and store them since its so many. I went through many trail and errors with this with my son but found out he doesnt mind cold milk so I just make his up morning of and keep in frig and do not reheat. What would be easiest with newborn so Im not making bottles with screaming baby? I also use the Playtex Drop Ins and would like to use those with new baby so I cant use boiling water or microwave..

Any advice would be great!

I always liked Enfamil best personally, although both of my babies have ended up on Alimentum.
unless you baby comes early, powder should be fine. I wouldn't give cold milk to a newborn, so you can warm them up in hot (not boiling) water. I've never premade any bottles, is it only takes 1-2 minutes to make a fresh one anyway.

We never premade bottles either, and used sterile "nursery water" or gerbers brand of sterile water to make it. We started our LO on Enfamil newborn but quickly changed to the Gentlease formula. After a few months we started switching between brands. Now we use Enfamil, Gerber, and Similac (all the gas/colic formulas). We also just give it at romm temp and never had any problems.

We're using Enfamil newborn with our LO-he just turned 6 weeks old. The only issue we've had is availability. We live in a fairly rural area, and it isn't carried at the local grocery store--only Super Wal-Mart. The hospital send us home with about 3 or 4 days worth of ready made formula.

I make a 6 bottles at a time--we also use playtex drop-ins and love them. I use nursery or distilled water and store them in the fridge. We just knock the chill off by warming them in a mug of hot water.

I a little concerned now that I'm not boiling the water. Seems like most moms on here boil the water, but I can't find any directions on the powered formula that say I should??? This is my 4th baby and I've not boiled water before, so hopefully it'll be ok :).

I don't boil either. I don't think its common in the US anymore. My LO has been fine.

I used Similac regular and Similac soy because we were concerned about the presence of meat (pork) products in the non-soy brands. I always made the bottles with cold to room temperature tap water. I never made them up ahead of time, I don't see how that would save time as you just fill them with water and a couple of scoops and shake. When going out I would just bring the single serve formula sticks or put the formula in a baggies.

Well I use what the hospital used gerber good start gentle.

In the UK our formula is made so it mixes best with water 30mins after boiling. This is done in order to kill off any bacteria in the powder (not cos we have bad water - our water quality is very good lol) as it's not sterile. HTH!!

the playtex dropins package says not to heat bc bag could burst. and the liquid formula has to be refrigerated after openning so that could possible be an issue if your lo wants a warm bottle. i have no experience with them though, i just read it on the box while shopping for bottles. my lo likes hers warm so i didnt get them. good luck

edited: i just reread your post...looks like you knew ^that^ already about the drop ins :)

I use Gerber Good Start. The Enfamil gives my daughter really bad gas. I boil my water, only because I don't use nursery water. I also make my bottles ahead of time and knock the chill off when its about time for her to eat. This may not work for you, but it works us:winkwink:. HTH!

I always make my sons bottles the night before as the formula says that mixed up formula is good for 24 hours, i boil water in a kettle then cool it in a pot the night before or use bottled water. I also use Enfamil and similac because it works well with my son and normally is on sale and can get coupons for them to off set the cost. I also use an electric bottle warmer to heat up my sons bottles because he does not like them cold. I also use glass bottles so i don't have to keep buying the drop ins.

We use Similac Advance. It's what the hospital gave us and my daughter takes good to it so we haven't switched. I use tap water and fill the bottle with water and let it sit to room temperature and then when it's time to eat put the powder formula in there and mix. Seems to work fine and is quick. If I don't use tap water, I use nursery water from the store.

I use similac sensitive. And I buy the ready to pour liquid one so no mixing. I make the bottles in advance and he likes it cold. My daughter was the same.

When Corey was a newborn we used Enfimil Newborn up until 3 months now we use Enfimil Premium Infant. He's never had a problem with it.

Jayden tried simliac advance the normal blue at the hospital but it kept making him sick,we ended finding out he is lactose

He has to drink soy, so he drinks simliac isomil soy. And had no problems

I'm Canadian, so it seems we have a different version of Enfamil--we use Enfamil A+, powder version. It's from 0-12 months.

I don't boil the water. I used to use nursery water, then ran out one day and started using tap and there's been no difference. As for pre-making them, I bought the Dr. Brown's Mixer (it's a pitcher that allows you to mix tons of formula at once--one jug lasts approximately 24 hours). It sounds silly to have, but it allows us to pour however much we think we need into a bottle when we need it, instead of potentially wasting a pre-poured bottle because the LO didn't want all of it. Plus, it takes up less space than tons of bottles.

We don't bother warming up bottles, even when LO was a newborn. He gets then straight from the fridge. Also, no problems, and it's really convenient.

Finally, Playtex. We had trouble with the nipples and the powdered formula. It kept clogging up the slow flow teats after a few weeks, and no amount of washing seemed to unclog them. Finally we threw out the whole set of bottles (well, gave them away) and replaced them with Dr. Brown's. They are a bit of a pain to wash, but we got used to it very quickly. The Playtex nipple/formula problem appeared to be a common one, and Dr. Brown's had the best rep for not getting clogged. Though I really do miss the ease of the drop-ins! (And maybe people here have had better luck than we did with them. Maybe it was a fluke with us?)

ohh I may have to check into this pitcher to make the formula in! I know how much my son drinks now and he barely wastes any but I remember when we started formula you never knew how much he would take or not!

Oh, the pitcher is great. I can't imagine how much time it would take me to make up pre-mixed bottles individually. Here you can mix it all in one go, which takes only a minute or so.

If I were to formula feed, I would use Gerber Good Start. It is the least allergenic milk that isn't a full blown hypoallergenic one.
