Abit complicated but Nathan has been breast fed since birth so 3 weeks but since Wednesday night he constantly wanted to feed to the point it was hours and my nipples were red raw and one bleeding so yesterday we decided for my sanity and his health to formula feed. I have expressed breast milk so have been making a 2oz bottle and adding in 2oz of breast milk.

My questions are, oh and I know your meant to make up feeds as you go but its just not possible for us to do so having 2 bottles ready to go is what we plan.

1) Can I make up a few bottles in advance? If so is it just the water then add formula and breast milk when he wants fed or can I make the whole thing up?

2)Once water/milk is cooled do you leave it on the side or put it in the fridge?

3) For anyone who may know is it possible to bottle feed and breast feed combined this early on?

Thank you!

We used to make them up in advance and yes it was just the water and we would add the formula as and when needed, although I think we made them up too and put them straight in the fridge when cooled.

2)Once water/milk is cooled do you leave it on the side or put it in the fridge? We put them in the fridge.

3) For anyone who may know is it possible to bottle feed and breast feed combined this early on? YES! I was doing both from early on as I couldn't soley breastfeed anyway, but if you are wanting to soley BF I believe that you should feed formula from a beaker and as little as possible (not long term) although this is venturing into something I really don't know about, but there are lots of ladies on here that could advise.

Good Luck hun! x

We combine both formula and breast.

We sterlise the bottles, boil kettle and sit for 3mins, add the water and leave on the side to cool, and we leave them at room temp. Add formula when needed.

I breast feed all day, then last thing at night it's a formula feed and formula feeding during night..

We don't boil water so I don't know it it's the same but you can make up bottles and put them in the fridge for it's either 24 or 48hrs, should say on the formula, or you could just put water in and add the powder.

You can def do both formula and breastmilk, keep in mind right now he is probably having a growth spurt and I know it's hard but it gets better so if you really want to breastfeed you may want to try and hold out a bit longer without the formula and see how he is in a few days

I maker mind up as I go along so can't answer 1 & 2 but 3 I have done both since I think day 2 or 3 just as my milk came in. LO wouldn't stay on for longer than 10 mins and they were getting concerned she wasn't getting enough so we had to top up with formula. She still goes on now when she wants it. About 3-6 times a day but again just for around 10 mins a time or less. Its just for comfort now I think! BUT I don't mind as long as she is happy

Don't worry about him wanting more BM hun, at three weeks they go through a growth spurt and it should pass within a week :)

Thanks ladies!

I think the two days of bottles and me pumping has given me a chance to see even more I want to continue on BF and also have a few bottles for just incase....so I can have some me time for an hour or so when things get a bit much and also OH can give a feed from time to time.

When do their growth spurts happen? Sorry if its a dumb question.

:hugs:
