HI Ladies,

I feel silly asking, but, How do you formula feed whilst your out? If its all supposed to be made up fresh, and used within the hour or two then what do you do about feeding outside your home?

:flower:

Ready to drink cartons and take the relevant number of pre-sterilised bottles out with us... if needs be blag a cup of hot water to sit the milk in for a few to warm it up a bit, but my daughter's got no standards and will drink it as it comes.

I take sterilised bottles, however many cartons I will need, a mini thermos flask of boiling water and a small plastic cup. Then at feed time all I have to do is pour the milk into the bottle, pour some of the boiling water into the cup, then pop the bottle in the cup to heat it up. I use Aptamil but if you use SMA you can buy ready made formula in disposable bottles (you buy reusable teats separately) so you don't even need to take bottle with you.

I used both concentrate and powdered: when I go out, I bring a bottle of boiled water and a portioned amount of formula powder.
If I am going to someones house, or somewhere I can warm it up, then I bring an ice pack...can usually get 2.5 hours

I pre-fill the bottles with water and have a small can of formula that fits perfectly in my diaper bag so when LO needs to eat I can just put the powder in a bottle and I'm good to go!

I do the same as i do at home.. did first of all just make up the bottle, and put in my bag with a thermal bag to keep warm, then give it to baby when he wanted feeding, but then heard about having to be made up fresh and didnt feel comfortable doing this. So i found another way, heres how i do it.

Mines on 4oz feeds, so i make up two bottles (or more if were going to be longer)
sterilize all the bottles/teats etc. boil the kettle and put 2oz of boiling water in the bottle, let it cool to room temperature. (sterilize an extra bottle for mixing forumla later and store. Fill a thermal flask full of boiling water, and put 4 spoonfuls of formula into individual pots. When he wants feeding i then get out the thermal flask fill the empty sterilized bottle with 2oz boiling water and mix in the formula, get the bottle of cooled boiled water and tip this into bottle you just mixed the formula in. Shake and done! And its the perfect temperature because of the hot and cooled water so no need to cool or heat. :) I do this at home too as well as out, it saves a lot of electric instead of constantly sterilizing, and boiling the kettle! Plus it takes a lot less time of baby crying when he wants a feed and is done in less than 2 minutes! :)

I used cartons when out and about but I did as Stephanyox does at home!

If you premake your bottles of formula for 24 hours and keep them in the fridge, could you bring a bottle in a cooler/ icepack then warm it when its time for a feed?

I do the same as some ladies, bottles of cooled boiled water and portions of powder and then add when needed.

Some people say water needs to be hot to steralise powder but this worked fine with son and midwife rolled her eyes when i mentioned it and said what i was doing was fine :)

Thanks everyone, I think adding the powder to cooled boiled water will be the one that suits us best. :)

SMA ready to go milk bottles are awesome! You can buy a sterilised teat, then re use after. I use them when out, and for the first morning feed. I used to use them for night feeds before lo was sttn.
