Fractured elbow at soft play - surgery this morning

So yesterday I was at a soft play with my two children. Dd is 5 in June and was off playing. I was in the soft play with her little brother. He is 2.5 and needs supervising for sure. He is very mobile considering but has mild cerebral palsy so needs that extra bit of help and supervision. It's not a big soft play and my dd is so quick and confident! Just before we were going to leave I was at the bottom looking up above, looking for her when she came down in tears clutching her arm. She fell down some soft play steps and presumably put her arm out to break her fall. She has fractured her elbow and is going into surgery later this morning to have the bone wired/pinned back in place.

Has anyone's child had this kind of procedure? I want to hear experiences if I can. The surgeon will talk to us about a recovery plan after the surgery.

Secondly I just feel so guilty that I wasn't with her. We were about to leave. If only I had gone 10 mins earlier she wouldn't be in this situation. who knows how long she'll be in a cast and then recovering for.

No dont blame yourself! i let my 2 and 3 year olds go off to play in the smaller softplays (and some bigger ones if i feel there capable) so at 5 you were perfectly fine letting her go plus you had your son to look after. Just one of those things

I have no experiance but i will say children recover and adapt soooo much quicker and better than adults!
I bet by the time she shows all her friends when shes back at school she will think her cast is cool and itl be one of those memories when shes older 'remember that time'
I hope the surgery goes well and she bounces back quickly. Dont let thr mum guilt get you!

Oh don't blame yourself looking after two is hard by yourself I sometimes let DD1 go off and play by herself! .

Like pp said she will think it's dead cool once she's got people to write and draw on it . She will bounce back quick enough!

I hope the surgery went well. Please don't blame yourself though, it was an accident. My son was off playing on his own in soft play at that age. I hope she recovers well.

I hope your dds surgery went well and she's recovering well. Please don't feel bad it wasn't your fault at all, and at 5 I'd expect my lo would be off playing by himself at a soft play. If it helps, I broke my arm when I was 4 my mum and sister were right next to me (fell off a little bike) it was just going to happen. You could have been walking right next to your dd on the steps and she still could have fallen and had the same break. I was in a cast from shoulder to fingers and barely remember the whole thing, she'll be ok.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. The surgery was ok, although the fracture was worse than they thought so she will have to have the cast on for 6 weeks instead of four. They had to wire her elbow so will need another surgery to remove those, but hopefully they can do that as a day case and the general anesthetic will hopefully not be as nerve wrecking the second time. She is well and cheerful in herself. Just getting on with things really as only kids know how!
