So I ate stuffed grape leaves for dinner today (Its a mid eastern dish), I then started to think about the nutrition of them, I looked it up and found that the vitamin A in grape leaves is very high! one site says that 1 grape leaf has 826 IU of Vitamin A, (it could be higher depending on the leaf and if you know what they are, they are not very big so you eat quite a few for a meal) i probably had 8 or 9 of them which equals out to something like 7434 IU! And thats just the leaves not counting other foods and my prenatal vitamins which has 1000 Iu. Im so scared cuz im always avoiding high in vitamin A foods like crazy, because i know very high amounts even if its not all the time can cause major birth defects and was told and read that pregnant womens daily recommended amount is 2,565 IU.
So iv forsure had over even 8000 IU today. Im scared I just dont know what to do!

I don't think a one time woopsie will harm your baby! I think I'd be more worried if you ate that every day since Vitamin A can build up. Maybe skip your vitamin tomorrow and drink a little more water than normal and just RELAX! You and baby are fine. Though I'd still ask your doctor or midwife about it at your next appointment to get her take. :hugs:

I was actually eating the last of a can of stuffed vineleaves when i read this! i've eaten about as many as you last night and this morning, but i really don't think a one time thing would be that dangerous. i'm just going to have to hold off buying any more this week which sucks as i am totally craving them right now!

I think you will be fine. We all had oops moments, but as long as it's not a regular thing we should all be fine. Maybe you should skip your vitamin for a few days to compensate.

I had tons of chicory during the first trimester, not knowing that it is associated with miscarriages. But I'm at 20 weeks and all looks good.

Stay calm. What do you think happens to Eastern women? Nothing. My mum makes vine leaves all the time. And they are only eaten as appetisers not more than 5-6! Once a month. Anything in excess is harmful.

Enjoy them! X

From the babycenter website:

How much vitamin A you need
Pregnant women, 19 and older: about 770 micrograms RAE of vitamin A (approximately 2,565 IU) per day
Pregnant, 18 and younger: 750 mg (2,500 IU)
Breastfeeding women, 19 and older: 1,300 mcg RAE (4,330 IU)
Breastfeeding, 18 and younger: 1,200 mcg RAE (4,000 IU)
You don't have to get the recommended amount of vitamin A every day. Instead, aim for that amount as an average over the course of a few days or a week.
Can you get too much vitamin A?
The average American diet provides plenty of vitamin A. It's available in meat, dairy, fish, eggs, and fortified cereals in the form of preformed vitamin A, or retinol. It's also in most fruits and vegetables, mostly in the form of carotenoids.
It's important during pregnancy not to get too much of the preformed vitamin A, which in high doses can cause birth defects and liver toxicity. (You can take in as many carotenoids as you want, however, from fruits and vegetables.)

Also, if you look on here you will notice that vine leaves contain the safe type of vitamin A (carotene) and not the unsafe type (such as is found in liver) retinol.

So, no need to freak and you can eat as many stuffed vine leaves as you like

Yep. I'm Greek and I can stuff my mouth with them. I think the danger lies when you get extra vit A supplements, additional to your normal diet.

And I'm under the impression that the retinol version of it is the one you need to watch out for anyway.

I wouldn't even think about it, truly. In fact, you've triggered my cravings. I'm gonna cook some stuffed vineleaves for Xmas I think- YUM!

Great post. You have eaten the good type of vitamin A, not associated with birth defects my dear. Nothing to worry about at all. :)

Don't worry hun. I have made them and ate A LOT more than what you ate with both my previous pregnancies and my boys are fine :)

arent stuffed grape leaves cooked? Cooked veggies don't have as much vitamins as when they're raw so it's probably the same for the grape leaves. But also as many have said, one time of eating it isn't going to cause harm to the little munchkin

I was going to say what petitpas has said.. They are totally safe. Like carrots. :) eat away!

And thanks for the idea.. I'm going to get some stuffed vine leaves now!!

Ditto on the safe type of Vitamin A thing. I ate loads of pumpkin and squash in the first tri when I couldn't stomach anything else. ALso high in the healthy type of vitamin A. Don't worry! As long as you stay away from liver you are fine!

I'm from the US, and I've never heard of eating grape leaves before. I'm interested. lol

plant vitamin A is mostly in the form of beta carotene. completely different then retinol

Samantha, I am sure you can find them somewhere close by. They are eaten a lot in Greek, Turkish, Albanian, Israeli and Iranian cuisine (surely more, but those are the ones I know of).
They look like this:

We sell those at the grocery store I used to work at in NC. Not very popular over here I'm afraid!
