So my son is strictly BF and for nearly a week now he has had a lot of gas and his poop smells like vinegar. I am wondering what could be causing this. I've heard of dairy intolerance, but he hasn't had any problems so far. I have avoided caffeine for almost a week now and no changes. I can try doing the dairy thing, but is there anything else that might cause this?

Same here, I was wondering about this too....Been so for the past week or so. I will follow this thread!

my little ones smells a bit like this or like brewers yeast. i assumed it was normal.

sounds like your LO's food is being fermented in the gut (not digested properly)

maybe a wheat intolerance or something of the sort

That's possible. We have started experimenting with a bit of rice cereal the last couple weeks. The ingredients say rice flour, soy, and vitamins basically. I'll stop experimenting with that and see if things change. Oh, and he is definitely teething. Tons of drool, constantly needs to suck on something. I can see little white spots on his gums and can feel the teeth. Thanks for the help!

Maybe he's not ready for solids? Also soy is highly allergenic and some babies have intolerances or allergies to soy when they are fine with dairy. My second youngest was intolerant to soy via my milk and sadly we only realised the possibility when I switched from BF to a formula which I later realised was soy free xx

I went to a La Leche League meeting this morning and one mother said her daughter had really bad gas and green stools and her pediatrician told her about prebiotics. Has anyone been recommended that for any reason? I considered it because my son has had green poops for a while. It used to be mustardy and green, but now it's just green.

My daughter always has vinegar smelling poops when she is about to teeth or during teething. Also sometimes she has looser stools when she teethes. I was told it was because swallowing all that saliva changes the PH of the digestive tract, so it is completely normal. :)

Do you mean probiotics? I take them myself every day because I have IBS and it really helps out. Also if you are ever on antibiotics they help keep the "good" bacteria in balance so no nasty yeast infections. :)

As far as food intolerance, my daughter was exclusively breastfed and didn't start solids until a bit after 6 months and when she started teething around 4 months I first noticed the vinegar smell so (at least in my case) it was not the food. :)

The probiotics are worth a try, they didn't help with my second youngest but they helped when my second eldest had thrush and digestive issues a couple of years ago, he'd had a really bad flu and it knocked his whole system out of balance (he was 4 or 5 at the time) the nystatin they prescribed for him did nada to deal with the thrush and they didn't give him anything to address his digestive issues, I started giving him probiotics in a yoghurt drink form and within 3 days he was totally better xx

Both of my LOs (one FF, one BF) had vinegary smelling poo and neither of them has intolerances or allergies. Both are healthy. I think it's just the way poo smells sometimes! If it's a recent thing and you've introduced foods, I would maybe ease off on that but otherwise it's fine.

It won't hurt him to cut out the rice cereal for a bit and see if that helps. Thanks ladies!

I am starting to wonder if it might be teething coming close. I noticed and enormous amount of drool from him last night and still the vinegar smelling poo. He has breastmilk only, and my diet is still the same.

Kimmi, I see our LO's are pretty close in age, mine born on the 23rd. Would be interesting to follow.

My little guy has been drooling tons for about a month now. Tuesday his teeth were bothering him real bad. He has only had the gas and vinegar poo for about a week though. I haven't changed my diet either. I've been giving him maybe an ounce of breastmilk with rice cereal in it every other day for about three weeks now. Not sure what is it, but keeping a close eye on it. Really hoping to figure out what's going on as he has been a horrible napper this week. He naps for 30-45 mins when I can get him to which is about 4 times a day. He used to nap for 2 hours at least twice a day plus another 30 minute nap mid-evening. I'm really concerned he's sleep deprived.

So I've noticed the vinegar smell kinda goes away the less he drools, so I think it's the teething. Also something else interesting. My son has had olive green stools for quite a while now, even before experimenting with the rice cereal. Today I gave him some gripe water and his next poop was mustard colored again. I don't know if this is even a problem, but I've just always heard their poop should be seedy and mustard colored. He has the seedy part, but it's not usually mustard colored. Do you think there is a reason for this?
