I finally got to my last day at work. I had been uncomfortable all week with pain in my pelvis but just general uncomfortableness that you get at 39 weeks pregnant. Went to work and from around 9:30 really felt just uncomfortable and was having what I thought were braxton hicks. I'd been having these for a couple of weeks but these were a little more intense. I was very tearful and kept crying at work. I was really unsure if this was labour as with my first I lost my plug the day before and had my show before contractions started. At 11 I started to think i wouldn't be able to finish the day at work and my friend came in to cover my class so I could have a rest in the staff room. I rang my husband and asked if he could come and work from home as I felt uncomfortable and I would feel better knowing he was at home. I was too embarrassed to say I thought I was in labour as I was worried they would send me home and it wasn't labour and they would think I was stupid for not knowing it wasn't labour. I did decide I couldn't carry on til the end of the day so I said goodbye to my class and colleagues at 12, got in my car and drove home.
During the drive home I realised I was definitely having contractions, I could breathe (and drive) through them, they were every 5 minutes. Got home, got all my bags and presents out the car and took them in the house. Changed into more comfy trousers and got my hospital bags downstairs ready. I was having to stop and breathe through the contractions at this point. I rang labour ward to tell them I needed to come in and that I had group b strep. I was told to come in. My husband arrived home, we chucked everything in the car and set off for the hospital at 12:50ish. Arrived, shown to a room and waited for the midwife. Contractions were on top of each other at this point. I asked my oh to get the midwife as I wanted gas and air, she said she was coming. My waters then went (with all my clothes still on) oh went to tell the midwife. She came in, saw there was meconium and said they would need to transfer me to labour ward as the mlu didnt do meconium births but asked me to get on the bed to monitor the heart rate quickly before I go. I got on the bed and then felt the need to push, she had a quick look and said the head was right there, got her gloves on and out popped her head. Quickly followed by the rest of her.
She was born at 1:21, weighing a petite 5lbs 13oz
She didn't breathe and was taken to resus with my husband. After five minutes my husband came back, she was fine but was being taken to nicu due to being shocked from a quick birth, she swallowed meconium and I didn't get my gbs antibiotics in labour so she would need them. She spent two days in nicu and we spent a further two days together on the post natal ward before being let home.
She was nil by mouth for 24 hours, I was given a pump which I used for the first day and the nicu stored it and then used it to feed her using a cup. Thankfully we are now fully breastfeeding with no problems. She is perfect.
I have found recovery this time round much easier. I had an episiotomy with my first which took forever to heal from. This time round a small second degree tear which had a couple of stitches. No pain or discomfort, I have been sitting normally since day one and feeling perfectly fine which has made having two under two much easier.
Any questions please ask.
