I just took my one hour glucose test and failed so I have to take the 3 hour. I know VERY little about diabetes as far as diet. I know you are supposed to avoid sugary foods and carbs but can anyone give me more information on the diet and things to eat/avoid??

Also if I don't pass the 3 hour, I understand they'll start with adjusting my diet to see if that controls it..?

Even if I pass the 3 hour test, I need to be more aware as I feel I may already be borderline.

Thanks for any info!!

Hi hun! I hope you pass your 3 hour test! I know quite a few people who failed the 1 hour but passed the 3.

The diet is about balancing really. You always have to balance your carbs with a protein. I eat between 30-45 g of carbs with each meal and 15-20 g of carbs at each snack. I eat 3 meals and 3 snacks a day. For breakfast, I have eggs and an english muffin with butter. For 1st snack, I'll have a Fiber One protein bar. For lunch, I have a sandwich on rye bread (usually turkey or salami with cheese). For 2nd snack, I have apples and peanut butter / grapes and cheese. For dinner, it varies but is usually a meat, veggies, and a carb (brown rice or whole wheat pasta). Last snack is at bedtime and I have whole wheat crackers with cheddar cheese.

If you do have it, you sort of learn what you can handle. I know someone who drinks milk but I can't drink milk at all as it makes my bs get really high. I also found out I can't eat fruit before lunch time otherwise I'm really high too. I crave cake and candies but just avoid them all together since nothing I have ever tried works.

I can't control mine with diet alone but I was allowed to try. I basically had to eat no carbs at all to stay within targets so I had to start meds. I take glyburide (an oral med) at bedtime to control my fasting.

I failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour, but my doctor was concerned about 1 of the numbers from the 3 hour so he had me take a class and start a meal plan along with blood sugar monitoring since he considers me borderline. If there is an education program in your area, I highly recommend it! Learning how to balance carbs and protein was very overwhelming at first and it has really helped me to have a focused education that my doctor referred me to. I was able to ask questions about my specific lifestyle and what not and was given a very specific meal plan on how many carbs/proteins/milks/fruits I can have with each meal/snack. The program I'm in also includes a follow up appointment after 2 weeks of being on the meal plan (that's this week for me). a friend that is a maternity nurse thinks all pregnant women should do the program I'm in in the third trimester. And if your doctor refers you to a program, it might be covered by your insurance.

Good luck!

Thank you! I took my 3 hour on Friday and they just called and left a voicemail (I missed the call ) and asked me to call them back. So I've left a message and am very impatiently waiting for them to call me back...I have a feeling I didn't pass otherwise I would have thought they'd tell me it was normal over voicemail.......:nope: I'm getting a little worried now.

I hate when I see the doctor's office calling! mine doesn't call if test results are good so for me it's never good when they call!!

:hugs: Aww, try not to worry too much hun! I hate when the doctor's office doesn't call back right away. I would call again. Hopefully everything will be okay! I just had a 24-hr urine test for pre-eclampsia and they called me with the results even though they were normal. Crossing my fingers for you!

The results were normal!! :happydance: I told them they had me panicking, lol and I asked that they leave a voicemail next time so I don't jump to conclusions
