Hello ladies,
I'm pregnant with number 2, was diagnosed with GD last time at 32 weeks and ended up on insulin (son was born at 7lbs12). I'm currently 11.5 weeks and the endocrine team have been on me like a hawk since I was 7 weeks. Since we found out I was expecting at the beginning of December I have eaten like a 'law abiding' diabetic would be, lean meat, no processes sugar, unrefined carbs and mixing protein with carbs at all meals. I have lost weight!

Last week my consultant took one look at my fasting bloods (all around 6-6.5) and put me on metformin (500mg) and night time insulin (2 units). Since taking the meds my fasting bloods have been from 6.3-7.3!! I'm so fed up and confused as to why they are going up with insulin and my question is has anyone else experienced this?? I'm going to leave off insulin this evening and see what it is in the morning.

I am not on metformin but have to take insulin before every meal. I have no idea why ur sugars r so high before meals, never had tht problem.

U may need insulin with ur other meals as well to keep ur sugars down? U will hav to ask ur doc/ dietician to review ur medication.

Just from my research you may be having one of two problems. The dawn phenomenon where early morning your body produces hormones to 'help' you get going. Unfortunatly with GD your body can't respond correctly so higher numbers. Or in your case the more likely one is the Somogyi effect, where in the middle of the night your sugar level is too low so your liver dumps glycogen into your blood to keep you going. I say it seems more likely because your numbers got worse with the addition of meds so that may just be pushing your sugars lower and your liver tries to compensate.

Here is a link that talks a little about these things.

Kyten already said what I would say - are you doing a carb snack at bedtime? Or just the insulin?

Hi Ladies, thanks for your replies! I saw my consultant this morning and she thinks it is probably due to eating late most evenings (I work 3 days and don't eat until 7.30-8pm) and that sugar is just floating around because it hasn't had time to be burnt off. I've had my metformin dose increased to 3x daily and 4 units at night...we'll see what happens in the morning!!
