GD thread AGAIN - sorry :(

hi, i dont find it to bad injecting, i find it hurts more when i test my blood, when i first found out with josh i had to see consultant, and diabetic team, mine are really nice,

Sorry, so pointless, BUT..............

I'm really happy this morning :happydance: I think I've cracked the diet thingy..... I had a bowl of Frosties this morning and an hour later my reading was 6 :happydance: That's the lowest reading I've had after breakfast!!!!!!!!!

The frosties were on the Low GI list, so I am going to follow a low GI diet for now and see how my readings go!

Hope all's ok with everyone else - and thank you all again for your replies, it's most appreciated! :flower: xxxxxx

:hi: going_crazy. I had GD, my inital reading came out at 11.9 after my GTT.

Well done on the breakfast. I had a problem with all carbohyrdates, I couldn't eat anything that had sugar in or with more than 20g of carbs. The breakfasts, i had to have scrambled egg on one piece of toast. I also found that I could actually eat more carbs later in the day than first thing in the morning. Lindseed bread is good, its very Low GI.

Thanks for your reply :flow:

Did you follow any particular diet or was it just trial and error? As you may have read, I've been given no real advice at the moment and I've been left to try things myself:wacko:

I've heard a lot about the GI diet being good for GD so I thought I'd give it a go.... suprisingly, Kelloggs cornflakes have a really high GI - 84  (and therefore no good for GD), yet Kelloggs frosties have a low GI - 55 and after my reading this morning I'm happy to try the GI diet!

I'm having scrambled egg tomorrow morning with wholemeal toast so we'll see how that goes! :flower: xxxxx

Unforntualey I wasn't given great advise either. It was trial and error. I could eat a sugar free jelly and a small pot of custard and it wouldn't affect my levels too much. I was injecting 3 times a day at the end and rescuing once or twice!

The GI diet is very good, but I worked out quite early on a out the carbs so just modified what I ate, I ate more protein in each meal. The diabetic midwife said that even established diabetics still really struggle with the levels. after breakfast.

Typical day for me (eating wise) was -

Breakfast - scrambled egg on toast (couldn't eat weatbix or anything like that)

Lunch - sandwich with the lindseed bread filled with salad and chicken slices or ham. With sugar free jelly pot

Dinner - chilli con carne with tiny tiny amound of rice.

I would only have small orange juice and one apple and thats all the fruit I was allowed, max 3 in a day!!

I lost lots of weight too, but Isobel came out at 7lb 3oz!

I've got so many things going on in my head right now....... I've been diagnosed failry early which to me is a worry as it could mean I could get diabetes later in life, and I'm also hoping that it hasn't affected baby....... I have had my 20 week scan which was quite detailed and they did have a look at babys heart which was fine so I'm hoping that there has been no damage to her.

I was only diagnosed 4 days ago and have had 2 readings of 10 and the rest have been between 7-8.5 which I don't think is horrendous, but bad enough I suppose!

Do you know why you needed insulin? I've heard several peoples experience and they vary so much! Some people say if the levels are over 7 three times a week then insulin is needed, others have said they were put on insulin straight away and I have no idea?!

Thanks again hun :flow: xxx

At first it was diet control but when they looked at what I was eating, I wasn't eating enough for Isobel to grow. So it was best to put me on Insulin, my readings I think was still in the 8's and higher.

I know you feel so over whelemed by everything and your are now ruled by food. I spent alot of the time crying, blaming myself. Basically the placenta is releasing hormones that is resisting the insulin from the pancreas and the pancreas needs to produce more but isn't thats why you need the injections.

You will get extra care now you have been diagnosed, extra scans etc and a date for induction between 38-39weeks. It is better to be diagnosed early to control your sugar levels so that your baby will get used to the lower sugar environment, which I'm sure they are enjoying the extra sugar! You don't want your baby to grow too quickly, it needs to grow in proportion, Isobels tummy on the scans where larger because of the diabetes but the further along I got it all started to even out because I had such good control of my sugars.

It doesn't sound too bad from people who have experienced it, just more of a pain in the arse!! :haha:

It may sound silly, but I am not concerned about needles, injections or having a big baby (my last DD was 9lb 8oz - without GD!) The only thing I have strong feelings about is being induced - and this is because if my previous experience of induction. It was awful and it also ended in a c/section. I am going to ask for induction to be the VERY last resort - obviously if baby is at risk then I will do whatever I can to make sure baby is ok, but I would prefer to be monitored and 'see how things go'!

Anyway, I suppose I'll know more once I've seen the dietician/consultant? In the mean time I'm going to stick to the GI diet and hope for the best!!!

going_crazy thats good that frosties worked! I would have avoided them as I thought they were covered in sugar- just goes to show that some of the foods that work are really unexpected.

Don't worry too much about being induced- I was told originally that I would only be induced if the baby was too big, otherwise they would let me go naturally, but with only a couple of weeks to go I'm ready now!
