Hi Ladies,

I was wondering if anyone has experienced going under GA for IUD placement? I went in a few months back to have Mirena inserted. After about 30 minutes of trying, lots of pain and the doctor making the nurse run out of the room for more "dialaters" it was unsuccessful. I was told the next try would be under GA. I'm terribly nervous but understand why he's wanting to do it that way. I was just wondering if anyone else had this done while under GA? I've never gone under and had my son via C-section since I wasn't dialating... I'm seeing a trend here lol. So I'm just needing someone to say yes they've done and it and everything was great!:thumbup::thumbup:

I had the copper IUD, and I faced the same problems you had. They tried over and over to insert the IUD, tried different dilators, and the pain became more than I could bear -- the doctor finally gave me a shot in my cervix, I think, local anesthetic. Then they were able to get the IUD in.

Honestly, if I could have done general anesthesia for the IUD, I would have! I know that there are risks associated with GA, but even with that, I was so upset over the surprise pain of the IUD that it still bothers me. It should have been a "simple" procedure and it definitely was not.

So...no advice to offer, obviously, but just wanted to say you aren't alone in having the IUD trouble. :hugs:

My sister had the mirena fitted under GA. She found it pretty painful for a while afterwards (she has endometriosis hence the mirena being fitted) but she is fine now. The actual GA was fine, she didn't have to stay overnight or anything and came back round quite quickly.
