Gestational Diabetes - Buddy?!

Good morning. I am scheduled to meet with a dietician tomorrow for the first time. I have picked up my supplies but don't really know what to do with them yet. I'm hoping tomorrows meeting walks me through using the meter and gives me meal ideas. I was diagnosed last Friday so I have been trying to reduce my carbs and increase my protein. I found light and fit Greek yogurt that is really good and some organic natural peanut butter that is ok.

Have other ladies had to change to a high risk OB or do your OB appointments stay the same? I feel a bit lost and unsure what to expect.

I was sent to a MFM and she diagnosed GD. I have multiple risk factors, so the regular OB sent me REALLY early (she told me she never sends anyone over that early). They did go over the meter (and also insulin for those on insulin) at the class.

Hi husky! I'm sorry you've been diagnosed with this too :hugs: Tomorrow they should walk you through everything, have a long think about any questions you may have and write them down. That's what I did, and I honestly feel like I got a lot more out of them than they would have told me if I hadn't asked my own questions. You're right to reduce your carbs - here they don't go with that approach and so a lot of women seem to end up on insulin very quickly, a bit unfair if you ask me. Anyway, I'm sure you'll feel a lot more in control after tomorrow. Feel free to ask us any questions you might have, I've been researching this like crazy for the past couple of weeks and feel like I'm doing pretty well with diet controlled. As for your OB I'm not sure how it works in the US but I know I'm now categorised as high risk so i would imagine it would be the same with you. But I'm not too sure!
In the US most women already go to a regular OB and some feel comfortable managing GD on their own, so won't send you to a MFM. It varies by doctor though.

I've just been diagnosed too, bit shocked as I wasn't expecting it at all. Still, here is is so have to crack on! Just on my way to the antenatal clinic to find out next steps

How did you get on missus? I replied to you on the other thread there too  I'm sure you feel a lot more in control after today? Xx

Hi Can i please join too :)

I was given my meter today and told to come back on thursday with my results and a food journal..

I had my dinner at 6.30 so I just tested my levels ... 9.2 :(

Im worried about the damage this will do to me ... the lunch time reading was fine 5.6

Does any of you panic when you see your readings or is it just me ?

Hi Hun. Yea Im very paranoid about what I'm eating lol, I sometimes feel very overwhelmed! But don't worry, one high reading won't hurt your LO. This is a huge learning curve, it will take time to get there. Was your 9.2 after an hour? Do you mind me asking what you had for dinner? Xxx

9.2 after 2 hours :(

Well tonight I had a small chinese for a treat
i actually had a small portion of fried rice and half a portion of roast duck tam style (chilli garlic and ginger)... I did explain to the dietician that I do like a wee treat once in a blue moon and she said those portions would be ok....

Strict diet from 2moro and see if it differs ... My dad is an insulin dependant diabetic.. he cant tolerate rice .. really messes his levels up.

Think this may be the case with me

Tomorrows plan is hopefully:

Special K for Breakfast..

Wee apple bout 10.30

Ryvita and cottage cheese for lunch.

Dont know what to have for my dinner 2 morro

It's a proper hassle isn't it, I was convinced I was eating well this pregnancy and then bam, fail the GTT.

I did ok tonight, 5.0 2 hours after sausage casserole, meant to be having takeaway tomorrow night so I'll be interested to see what happens then.

Ive not had a reading that low (5.0) Im so jealous...

Onwards for tomorrow.

Im going to make my chicken praprika ( done in the pressure cooker) 2morro for dinner and see if that brings lower results ..... Its so delicious and quick to make.

the other night I had two slices of toast and a banana for my dinner and my results were 9.6 ... (paramedics took it - long story I had severe palpitations and they got called out).

Could it be my metabolism at this time of night?? Oh a question for the diabetic obstitrician.

Jakki- Its so hard isn't it! I would suggest reducing the amount of carbs you have to be honest. I know the NHS tell you to base your meals around carbs but if you research GD you see that a lot of other countries (USA, Australia etc) advise the reduction of carbs. There was also a radio programme on the other day were it was investigated - as carbs = glucose it seems silly to tell a diabetic to eat more of them.

What I have found works for me is fewer carbs in the morning (this is when hormone levels are highest) so for eg two eggs scrambled on one bit of granary toast. Protien helps slow the release of carbs into the blood. As does fat. So peanut butter or cheese is your friend now. Lol. I have lower readings after a couple of crackers and cheese than I do an apple. Berries are good fruits i find. Pair your carbs with protien and this will hopefully help. I know for the first week I went right back to simple meals until I found what worked for me, now I'm playing around a little.

It's such a learning curve, and tbh it's grim at times, but I'm determined that I wont end up on insulin if I can possibly help it. So right now counting my carbs is working :)

Oh and my opinion on the banana and toast reading is that bananas have a lot of sugar and toast is carbs too - so this prob overwhelmed your system. Maybe try cheese on toast one night and see if there's a difference :) You could have salad with it for yor veg. Green veg is meant to be good for us GD'ers (lucky us huh lol)

I hope you don't mind me sharing all this with you, I don't mean to sound like a know it all, I just had such a bad experience at my clinic it's made me take matters into my own hands lol

I found this website really helpful :)

My fasting blood this morning was 5.6, .1 more than they'd like. Why might that be, I really don't understand all this at all :/

My hospital the fasting glucose needs to be below 6.0! My midwife is happy with my 5.6's.

Try exercise in evening for 10mins and see if that brings down the fasting level.

Fasting bloods suck. Lol. There doesn't seem to be anything much we can do about them. You could try having a snack with carbs and protein before bed - some woman seem to say that works for them as if you go too long without food tour body can produce glucose to prevent a hypo like state. I can't remember what mine was this morn, will have to check but I know it actually went UP from last night!

Toast and banana are both carbs that will raise your blood sugar. You need some protein and fat to go with the carbs or you will get spikes.

Here's a website the dietician from work sent me. It does concur with the GD I went to.
https://www.nutrition411.com/component/k2/item/28589-meal-planning-easy-as-1-2-3
https://www.nutrition411.com/component/k2/item/28552-sample-meal-plan-and-carbohydrate-counting
They also had a week plan on there, but I don't feel like looking it up now. I found it under site map, then down to meal plans. For first tri it's the 2100 calories likely, then 2400 for the 2nd and 3rd (unless you have more than one like I do).

Well I got up this morning and my levels were 6.7:(
I didn't feel well so i dipped my urine with a keytone stick ... It was ++++

Need less to say I was weeched in to hospital and put on a 4hr drip to try and flush them out...

I'm very lucky .. I was told by the nurses to only check for keytones if my levels were above 10.. I don't know why I did but I'm glad I trusted my instincts or the baby and i could have been in serious trouble

I'm typing this from the hospital bed at the moment :(

On a brighter note I will be getting maternity tea and toast in 10 mins and that really is the badgers nadgers x
