Hi ladies! I have just been diagnosed with GD and I'm due for my first hospital appointment at the diabetes clinic this afternoon! I was wondering if any of you were in the same boat? It's so much to take in, it'd be lovely to have someone to chat to!

I'm 25 and this is my first baby. I'm totally overwhelmed and really anxious about my appointment - I so don't want them to make me feel any more guilty than I already do. I'm bigger, and I've always had problems with food, so to be honest I haven't weighed myself in the last 8 weeks. I'm terrified they'll weigh me and then shout at me if I've gained too much :dohh: I'm feeling quite lost about this tbh.

Here's to a sweet and chocolate free Christmas ;) Looking forward to chatting with all of you that are in the same boat! Xx

Hi Miwi:hi: Dont stress too much it's not something that you caused....

I too have just been diagnosed with GD i had my appointment with the specialist today. I had GD with my 2nd pregnancy, Im 31 a little over weight and blamed myself when i found out last pregnancy. But as it was explained to me, GD is different from normal diabetes..... apparently having GD does unmask the fact that you MAY develop diabetes later in life, but not from GD something that you have a predisposition too.

I was told today that i had to monitor my blood sugars for the next week and watch what i eat (i was given a list go foods that were acceptable) and if after the week my Blood sugars are still high i will need insulin. I did last pregnancy, for the 2 weeks prior to insulin i was eating sooooo healthy but yet i still needed insulin so that in its self tells you that sometimes it doesn't matter what you put in your mouth its your body that is not working properly. Once i had my son my blood sugars went back to normal with in 48 hrs.

Don't beat yourself up over it:hugs:

Aw thank you. That's a great way of looking at it - that your body just isn't working properly. I've been so careful about what I've been eating since Monday when I found out, but obviously I've no idea if I've been doing well as I've no monitor yet. Actually quite looking forward to being able to check my sugars so at least I know which foods affect me and which don't!
I have a feeling that I'll end up on insulin, there's a lot of diabetes on my dads side so I do know that I'm predisposed to Type 2. I just hope they don't criticise my weight!
Are you basically reducing carbs based on the food list they gave you? Xx

I've just been diagnosed and had to start insulin.

How are you finding it? Did they put you on. Insulin straight away or did they try diet first? I feel for you, insulin injections can't be nice :hugs:

Yeah cutting out obvious sugary foods( cakes chocolate ect) and monitoring my carb intake, they told me i could have some carbs just small portions. TBH i was starting to feel unwell before the diagnosis but since changing my diet a week ago a feel a whole lot better.

I've already been on Glumetza and tried limiting carbs. They had me do a log for a week and I had some really high readings, so they just called in insulin.

Hi there! I'm sorry to hear that you were diagnosed with GD. It can be really tough coming to grips with the diagnosis. I know I've had a terrible time with it. I have gone through it once already and have had it since 6 weeks with my 2nd now (I have a long, long way to go lol).

When I was pregnant with my daughter, and truthfully now as well, I was embarrassed going to the diabetes clinic. The first time, I felt like such a jerk! The nutritionist was asking me all sorts of questions, showing me labels and making me add up carbs and proteins. Everyone was really nice and really helpful. I think it was more of a problem with myself feeling self conscious and ashamed. I couldn't control with diet alone so I was put on an oral med (glyburide) after about a week. It was so difficult to curb my cravings but I survived. I was very overweight to begin with and actually lost 2 lbs during my 1st pregnancy. Then I pigged out after I gave birth. Probably not the best idea but after being deprived for months I had to eat :).

Now, pregnant with #2 (I'm 25 yrs old too btw), I've had GD since 6 weeks when my doctor had me start testing. Went back to the diabetes center for a refresher and to get a new meter. Wasn't so bad this time since I knew all the basics. I did lose about 40 lbs since my last pregnancy and was so proud. Learning I had GD again was a major blow to my self esteem. I know you're more likely to have it again once you've had it but it stinks! I have a long road of dieting ahead of me this time. I had about 1 week of out of control sugars and started back on the lowest dose of glyburide this past Monday. I feel 100% better and more confident that I can get through this now. My fastings before meds were about 135-150 and my 2 hr post meals were always 114-145 (MUCH MUCH higher than in my first pg). My doctor wasnt sure that the low dose would work this time but it's done wonders and I feel like I can relax a bit knowing my sugars are safely under control.

As for your weight, I completely understand. I'm in the same boat. I have an amazing doctor who is soo caring, just a really wonderful man, and he has never made me feel bad about my weight. You might be pleasantly surprised to see that you gain very little weight with your new diet. I'm allowed 20 lbs total however when you cut your carb intake and are just eating much healthier you may even lose weight (which my doctor has confirmed is completely safe if you are over weight and obv not starving yourself or anything).

Anyway, long message lol. If you need anyone to chat with, I'd be happy to talk to you! I know how tough GD is and it does help talking to others about it. :hugs:.

Mind if I join? I just found out today that I had a very high reading on the one hour test. They said no need to do the three hour test. I see a dietician next Friday so unsure what to do between now and then. I have been on weight watchers most of my adult life and have stayed within 10 lbs of my goal weight. I feel a bit like a failure. We got pregnant through ivf after we lost our first ivf baby in January. Getting diagnosed with gd feels like yet another hurdle.

I haven't found it all that bad. I have to do insulin twice a day (but a very low dose for now). I went to class this week and I was surprised by how many carbs I do have to eat. Cakes and sweets are pretty much out, but some of the other things I like aren't.

Hi ladies, how are you all going?

Ive been monitoring my sugars for over a week now and I'm finding the fasting reading first thing in the morning is high but during the day they are under what they should be:shrug: Anyone else having this issue?

I have a review on Thursday, will see what she says.

When I started testing about two weeks ago, my fasting was always between 135-150. Then after breakfast it would always be high too but I guess it was so high in the morning. I had to eat basically 0 carbs to be on target. My doctor just started me on glyburide this past Monday which has lowered me down to the 90's most mornings.

The MFM I go to took me off the Metformin and put me on insulin when I had high readings. She wasn't crazy about me being on Metformin to begin with. She said insulin is the only thing that is proven to be 100% safe for baby, so she prefers to use only that. It's a pain, but if it's better for the babies, then I'm fine with it.

Are you doing any exercise in the evening to matabalise the carbs/sugar that you've eaten? a 10min walk around the block would help.

Hi ladies! How are you all doing? I've been MIA for a little while, sorry lol. It's so nice reading this thread though, everyone is so supportive!
I'm doing ok, my readings are all good, though I'm being super careful with carbs and I'm only just starting to become a little more adventurous - I've been sticking to the same meals for the past week as I was too afraid of a high reading! Needless to say I'm totally fed up of my meals lol. Back at the GD Clinic a week today, hopefully I still won't have to start medication - the longer I put it off the better I think (within reason!)

Danni - my morning readings are usually my highest too. I've read that it's due to higher levels of hormones first thing in the morning. Maybe speak to your Dr and see if they would want you to start metaformin or similar just once a day before breakfast? That might help you?

What's everyone plans for Christmas day? Are we being good or allowing a 'normal' Christmas dinner??

Good morning. I am scheduled to meet with a dietician tomorrow for the first time. I have picked up my supplies but don't really know what to do with them yet. I'm hoping tomorrows meeting walks me through using the meter and gives me meal ideas. I was diagnosed last Friday so I have been trying to reduce my carbs and increase my protein. I found light and fit Greek yogurt that is really good and some organic natural peanut butter that is ok.

Have other ladies had to change to a high risk OB or do your OB appointments stay the same? I feel a bit lost and unsure what to expect.

Hi husky! I'm sorry you've been diagnosed with this too :hugs: Tomorrow they should walk you through everything, have a long think about any questions you may have and write them down. That's what I did, and I honestly feel like I got a lot more out of them than they would have told me if I hadn't asked my own questions. You're right to reduce your carbs - here they don't go with that approach and so a lot of women seem to end up on insulin very quickly, a bit unfair if you ask me. Anyway, I'm sure you'll feel a lot more in control after tomorrow. Feel free to ask us any questions you might have, I've been researching this like crazy for the past couple of weeks and feel like I'm doing pretty well with diet controlled. As for your OB I'm not sure how it works in the US but I know I'm now categorised as high risk so i would imagine it would be the same with you. But I'm not too sure!

Thank you. It is nice to know I'm not in this alone. I have feelings of guilt thinking I caused this but logically I know I didn't. I just want this baby to be ok. It has been a long 4 years working on making this take-home baby and we just want her to be ok.

I am due the 19th of march so we are pretty close.

Aw Hun I felt the same at first. I was utterly mortified that I'd gotten this diagnosis. I'm bigger and I though that was why, but I've been reassured by my dr and from what I've read online that really its just luck of the draw - and it's actually a hormonal thing which is why it goes away most of the time. Your little girl will be just fine, as long as your sugars are kept within a good range there is no reason that she won't be! I specifically asked the dr I saw if the complications were only in woman where GD was not controlled and she said 'yes, exactly' So we will both be fine :hugs:

Oh and Yey for march babies :) Not long now!!

My MFM has given me both a buffered insulin and regular. I take the buffered at night and it keeps the morning numbers down and then take the regular with breakfast and that keeps my breakfast/ lunch numbers down. Lately my dinner numbers have been fine. (I was a bit worried about tonight's numbers as I had soup, hamburger, black eyed peas, and collard greens, but my number was only 98.)
