Gestational Diabetes - Buddy?!

That's great news!! :)

I think I might. I'm so fed up with the lack of support from my hospital, really feel let down. I'm back for an appointment on Thursday, so I'll definitely ask then! the diabetes nurse was meant to phone me on Thursday to check my numbers but I never got a call - thankfully my numbers have been quite consistent but I am worried about ketones tbh as my carbs are reduced from what they where previously. How low is too low I wonder? Lol. Sorry for the blab!!

I'm getting home today ... Woohoo feeling much.better .

That's strange that they didn't give u sticks .... Maybe u should ask for them x

Yay for coming home. I don't get sticks either. Didn't in last GD pregnancy either. So it's something I'm not worries about.

Can I join too please. Was diagnosed on Xmas eve, they are not sure if it's gestational or type 2. The nurse told me if I had two consecutive readings above 10 then do a keystones one. I have had readings from 6.6 right up to 12.9. I know it's only been Xmas eve and Xmas day, but I am really struggling what to do, what to eat etc. I have had two miscarriages and I am 10 weeks and 3 days into this pregnancy HELP xxx

Hi, I am in the US so the system is a bit different here, but I think it cannot be completely different. Diabetes, especially if they suspect type 2, should be treated by a specialist, ideally someone who understands about diabetes in pregnancy. Here we are immediately referred to a maternal-fetal medicine clinic that deals with high risk pregnancies. I was diagnosed at 11 weeks because I had GD in my previous pregnancy, and they tested me early. Why did they test you as early as 10 weeks?
So at the clinic I had a bunch of tests and meetings with a dietitian (explains what and when to eat) and a diabetic educator. Also I saw a perinatologist (high risk pregnancy doctor) who gave a big picture and decided about the general plan of my pregnancy (what additional tests to have, what medication, when to deliver etc.).
They did an HbA1C blood test that shows the average level of blood glucose during the last 3 months. This usually helps to see if they deal with gestational diabetes or a "real" one...
So I believe you need to ask for a referral to an endocrinologist or a diabetic consultant. If treated properly, diabetic women can and do have healthy babies. Please PM me if you have any questions.

When are you due back at hospital? This is my second GD pregnancy.

Rule of thumb - cut down carbs, cut out sugar, increase protein, and veg.

The carbs I can have are 3-4 new potatoes ( with skin on), small jacket potato eating the skin, 30g-ish basmati rice. Granary bread. Oat biscuits with cheese.

I tend to eat a lot of home made soups, meat & veg for main meal. Scrambled egg with bacon on granary bread for breakfast.

Hey ladies,

Auch Ive been having such an awful time the past few days ... My finger prick phobia has returned with avengence. Even though I know its unlikely to hurt im panicking, sweating, crying you name it.... Not to mention my levels have been all over the place.

My dietician says I was to eat my carbs, but the carbs are punching my levels through the roof...

Its getting to the stage im too scared to eat and to scared to test my levels..

I just want to cry :(

Sorry pretty pointless post.. just had to get it off my chest.

I have an appointment with the diabetic specialist today, im dreading it, im just so worried he wont get my severe phobia and will paint brush over it

It is quite normal even if you cut down the carbs to still get high readings. What are they?

They may put you on medication for you to have carbs in your diet.

Jakkiw2 they'll likely put you on insulin as mine was doing the same. Pretty much any carbs would send my BS soaring. I've been fine on a low dose of insulin.

bread and rice put in over 9.5

Pasta is a mine field im ok if I have 6 piece but thats about it.

Bread and rice together aren't a good combo as they are both carbs. Try one or other.

Ahh.. Bread unless its burgen soya and linseed sends me over.

Are you having basmati rice? And weighing it at 30g after its cooked?

I was put on insulin today too. I have been eating 6 servings of carbs per day on average. My meal numbers are ok but my fasting numbers were between 89-113 so they are starting insulin. I thought that was a normal range but they want them under 90. I hate the idea of injecting more chemicals into my body. This babyis the result of our 2nd ivf and we were hoping the high risk piece was behind us.

The dietician said I need to get in 12 servings of carbs per day minimum. This will put my numbers over the 120 they recommend for sure.

Insulin is not really chemicals. It IS what the body produces on it's own. The MFM told me it really is the only thing she is comfortable with and is sure it is 100% safe for the babies. She really didn't like that I was on Metformin and took me off the minute she had to add insulin.

I was put on metformin today ... the doc was lovely he said he didnt want me to reduce the carbs so metformin it was....

Going to try egg noodles tommorrow x

I asked my consultant about metformin, and she told me that a number of researches proved metformin and glyburide to be safe in pregnancy (both are pills, not injections). In the past only insulin was considered safe. However she told me that metformin will usually correct minor glucose intolerance, and insulin is still the most powerful tool (however metformin doesn't cause hypos while insulin can).
Jakkiw2, I literally cannot tolerate any rice or bread, too :(. I eat buckwheat, quinoa and oat. Quinoa in moderation is known for lowering BS. You can have it as a side dish or inside a salad... All these grains are kind of weird to eat, but they are really healthy, and I am telling myself that it is only for another month...

I just got diagnosed today. Can I join?

I'm 30 with my second. This is my first time with gd and I had no precursors so I'm glad they caught it.
