Hi ladies! I need your alls help. I can find online what your sugar levels should be normally but I can't find any levels for pregnancy. I was under the impression that they are slightly higher in pregnancy but I can't seem to find a normal range. I did my 1 hr glucose test and it came back @ 176 (i know its high! i just dont know how high it is!!) and they ordered a 3 hr test but on the order for it it says gestational diabetes on the diagnoses. So I'm wondering 1 if i do have it and 2 what my levels should be?? Any advice would be appreciated seeing as I'm only 10 weeks!! Thanks!

Sorry can't help, I had GD in my last pg and have been tested twice this time (third time tomorrow) but I think they use different units. Over here you level needs to be less than 7.8 two hour after drinking glucose drink - if you can find a way to compare units that might help. Good luck xx

Hey I have GD.... my sugars are supposed to be no higher than 120 after 2 hours of eating and now higher than 140 after 1 hour of eating. Fasting sugars should be 65-100.Hope that helps!

I have GD and had a GTT come back with a 7.9. I have always been told that anything over 7 is high and anything over 6 needs to be monitored. Sorry, I dont know the conversion into the rates they use in the States

i thought i heard it should be no more than 140. but i am surprised they tested you so early. i just had my gluclose tested today.

I had to have mine tested since i'm genetically predisposed for diabetes (all for grandparents insulin-dependant by age 30) and i have chronic pancreatitis as well. which has a high rate of leading to diabetes

i just found a conversion for UK levels to USA levels...UK level x 18= USA level! So I divided my 176 by 18 and got 9.7....so yea I think its high! we'll see how the 3 hr test goes!

I have been asked to go in for one of these on the 6th i think it is of january (not wrote it on calender yet!) as my dad had diabetes insulin dependant. Now..If im honest i dont want to go in as im strggling with low blood pressure, and im a ngihtmare to get blood off at good times let alone bad and not drinking water etc. Im scared something bad will happen, so im contemplating speaking to my midwife to cancel this..but can anyone tell me the harms of gestational diabetes? Sorry if sounding dim, im just a bit scaredy cat xx

From what I've read (I'm not a doctor!) it can be serious if it's not monitored properly. The baby receives more sugar than it should so grows disproportionately. It's lungs etc. do not grow at the same rate so can be immature. It is very important to get checked for it as the docs will want to ensure levels are regulated if it does turn out positive.

There are more potential issues at birth with temperature control etc. so baby would need to be carefully monitored. GD babies are rarely allowed to go overdue as the placenta can be less effective later on (and there is a higher likelihood of stillbirth if left to go overdue).

As I said, many women have GD and as long as it is monitored and regulated, it shouldn't be too much of a problem but if left untreated can be serious.

As for the GTT, I promise you it is no big deal. You have a fasting blood test (a finger prick test and normal blood test), drink a glucose drink (think flat, gloopy 7 up) then have another blood test 2 hours later. I'm not a fan of needles but this wasn't an issue at all (in fact the finger prick test was the worst bit of it!)

Be brave and go have it - it's worth it for little one xx

I am scared bout having this too

I have PCOS with a family history of diabetes

I have both of these, have been tested twice and have come back negative both times. The thought of the test is far worse than the reality I can assure you (the worst bit of the whole experience is waiting for 2 hours at the hospital - it's boring!!)

Just been for my 3rd GTT this pg (bummer). My top tip is to ask if you can have it done in phlebotomy, they are much better at it than mws (I refused to let mw do mine again). Just got to wait for results now, but it's much better to know xx

fasting should be under 95 (some places 90) and 1 hour after eating it should be under 140. so it was pretty high but not dangerously high.

is it worth giving up eating sugary stuff and things or is it more of a case if you are gonna get it your gonna get it

I think i should go and get it, but i just feel so weak if i dont have anything, i have to drive there and dont think i can if i dont haveanything especially water or toast! For those 2 hours your waiting ill be sick as a dog :-( Finger prick is fine, they do it to me when i end up in hospital, but when i say rubbish veins....i really mean rubbish ones! My mw cant get mine ever like 4 times she tried and sent me down to the labs to get it done there..my consultant was good, but scary! x

I was allowed water but nothing else. Also, rather than the mw taking bloods a phlebotomist did it (she came up to the clinic). I'm sure the reality wont be as bad as the thought of the test x

just wanted to update, i do indeed have gestational diabetes. i went for my 3 hour glucose test yesterday after fasting for almost 16 hours...my first draw was 96, 2nd was 196, 3rd was 172, and 4th was 70. Soooo, I go to the dr on Monday to learn all about insulin! Even though its sucks to have it, I figured I would (didnt expect this early) but at least I know how to take care of it and it will be treated the whole time.

Have they told you that they will be putting you on insulin? Mine is managed throguh diet and tablets (metformin) and I test my sugar levels 4 times a day.

yea, since i have strong genetics for diabetes (every grandparent) plus my chronic pancreatitis, its better to be safe than sorry and they decided insulin was the best route, which is okay with me as long as they teach me all about it
